1. That's the nicest thing I've ever seen you post about foreign autos or their makers!
Good for you... that is a wonderful sentiment.

3. I feel terrible for them...
...but I still hope our union workers make and sell more cars than Japan does. I know it is a globalized world and that lots of Americans make Japanese cars right here in the US, but my first instinct is to support American union workers at American car companies no matter how much I may sympathize with the Japanese in this time of tragedy.

I'm sorry it happened, but I'm not going to root for Japan to beat out our workers. There is no second bite at the apple. If GM and Chrysler get in severe trouble again there will likely be no significant government assistance and those union jobs will be largely wiped out.

I spent a lot of time in Japan and like the people very much, but American union workers at American companies are my first priority.

8. We need human compassion first...
Otherwise "we" look like selfish asshats.

9. If the people lack basic resources and security then charity is impossible
If you can't help yourself then you cannot help others.

I'll not encourage the purchase of Japanese vehicles when our own jobs and wages are cratering.

An aid package is another issue.

10. Although I don't practice the religion per se...
Edited on Tue Mar-15-11 01:02 PM by JuniperLea
I was raised with the Christian faith that you shared what you had and had faith that your charity would be rewarded by the continued blessing of enough to share. Anything less is viewed as selfish bullshit. We are all in a shit hole... I'm willing to share my rags and hovel. You are free to be selfish is you choose.

13. Sharing and promoting the purchase of their manufactured goods
are not the same thing.

I'm all for an aid package, blood/tissue/organ drives, donations, logistics support, use of military equipment, supplies, and whatever else we can do for the most part but the idea of putting their finished goods above ours as a method of support is self defeating.

I'm all for charity but that does not extend to supporting the Japanese manufacturing industry at the expense of our own flailing one. If you can't grasp this little piece of nuance then that is on you.

11. "If you can't help yourself then you cannot help others"
Which is why they need our help now.

If they don't recover what happens when we get hit on he West Coast? Ask India for help? The Soviet Union? Argentina?

12. I'm not against helping at all. Promoting the purchase of their manufactured goods
is not an aid package.
