So a man and his wife pulled up next to my window at a stop light today... |
|
Edited on Mon Mar-14-11 08:16 PM by Zephie
"I saw the back of your car", he said and I instantly prepared myself for a short terse battle before the light changed. This has happened before. I have a growing collection of political bumper stickers and where I live it garners some attention. The man held out a stack of what looked like papers and said "I think you should have this." Internally I swore. I hate wasting trees and usually reject people handing me unknown flyers on that basis, but I reached out and took them. I flipped them over and was stunned to see it was a set of bumper stickers that said "Support Our Troops, Bring Them Home Now" over a dove. I looked up and managed to thank him through my shock. He smiled and said that he was glad to give them to me and he and his wife were from New York, and that his daughter had pleaded with them to cover their liberal bumper stickers before coming down to Florida calling it "enemy territory". We told them we were glad they were here and that we need all the help we can get in our overly conservative area.
The light changed and we both drove off.
It was a wonderful moment and made me so happy. I've been very heartbroken about the state of the world lately. It's good to know that there are still some of us out there full of love and peace, and who are glad to pass it on. I still have two of those bumper stickers and I'm very much looking forward to the next fortunate stop light when I can pass those on.

6. Thank you for sharing that, Zephie. Sometimes I wonder what planet I came from. |
|
It seems like so many people have turned into teabags, full of some kind of poison. Trying to steep their poison in the waters of my liberal cup. Where did these people go so wrong? Recently, it was my brother, who I've always been close to...my best friend...started sending me rightwing crap e-mails. We went to the same schools. WTF didn't he learn? What about the other wingnuts? Some of them are fairly nice people, in some respects, at least until politics comes up. Then their fangs come out, and blood drips from their greedy lips.
Sigh. It's good to hear there are those who would put a dove over a "Support Our Troops" sign, and even reach out to a stranger to share it all.

7. I was SO stunned. I couldn't even convey it in words if I tried to write it for hours |
|
Things like that so rarely happen. I'm so lucky to have had this happen today. Such a brief chance encounter, but wow, what an impact! I'm still reeling a bit to be honest. I've been so depressed with all this tea maddness, and living under Rick Scott is just getting more and more difficult. I really needed this hope injection. =)

Never ceases to amaze we progressives even think for one moment the backlash from our typical "peaceful" type bumper stickers. Why would we be fearful of being attacked because we wish for "less wars" "less Poverty" and so on? <rhetorical>
Meanwhile, back at the booby hatch, the bagger types have no qualms running around with "sites on Obama" or "keep our country white"... Even the hunter types have no issues with "if it's brown it's down" or my personal favorite "if it flies, it dies".
Seems rather clear to me, progressives hold positive views, them? not so much.

13. One of my first OPs on DU was right after |
|
I had been nearly run off the road by a bagger. I don't understand it either. I actually saw a van a month or so ago that was just plastered with anti-liberal hate speech. Someone had actually gone to the work of buying individual lettering and then pasting it to form sentences all over the van. It ranted about Obama, the dangers of "being a world citizen", the "oncoming slavery that the neonazi socialist elite" would bring upon "good white christians", among other truly disturbed things. It was the most insane thing I'd ever seen. I vaguely wondered what his FR handle was. I tried to get some photos of it but the guy driving saw me and did a quick u-turn and went the other way...
I wonder if he was embarrassed?

34. I saw a truck at the local grocery store near Flint, MI, |
|
and it was plastered with the same type of "messages". I wanted to wait around to see who the heck would drive a truck like that....but chickened out. I have several acquaitances/friends who are severly repulican - I try to remind them that we usually have more in common than we think, and that debate is good, and that facts are facts...

I had a bunch of anti-boosh, anti-war stickers in the back window of my truck during the boosh years. My area is pertty liberal, but we still have our share of mean, rich wingnuts. One man, who pulled up behind me at a stop light, was visibly upset with my stickers. In my rear view mirror I could see him shaking his fists at me & yelling & flipping me off.
The following day, I was with a friend & going through a Taco Bell drive through. A man & teenage boy were in a truck behind me. They were laughing & the young man got out of the truck, ran up to the passenger's window. My friend was concerned, but I told her to roll it down. Still laughing, the boy said, "We love your stickers! Especially the one that says, 'You can't spell COWARD without a W!'"
It's a reassuring to encounter like minded people, but especially for those of you in red areas. Sometimes all another person needs to speak out, is to see that they are not alone in their sentiment. Keep those stickers on, Zephie!

I find it even slips into local sports talk shows. I once emailed a local host to let him know that one can be a liberal and like sports (even in the Southeastern Conference) and that I wasn't listenening to his show for politics. He actually wrote back and said he didn't mean for his political opinion to come out so much during his show, I guess that was SOMETHING anyway. Everyone just takes for granted if you live here, you are a far-right conservative.

We live in different worlds. In mine, part of winning, part of being what some might call "progressive", is the simple fact that I long ago stopped caring about what other people thought of me.

25. I used to have a bunch of inflammatory liberal |
|
stickers on my car, and only once got a sarcastic comment from others. I used to carry extras in my glove box and give them to people who noticed what I had. At the time I lived in Kansas, and I absolutely refused to be intimidated by the right-wing idiots out there.
My personal favorite was" He wasn't elected on 9/11 either.
I need some new ones.

When in Reno last weekend, a surly redneck pulled up next to me at a light and yelled the Palin line, "How's that Hopey-Changey" thing working out for you?"
I smiled and told him "It's working out a lot better than that Dopey-Quitter thing is working out for you."
He was so flustered he couldn't get anything out before the light changed.

27. I had a couple of similar occurences |
|
A woman pulled up next to me at an intersection and asked where I got my bumper sticker (Palin/Bachmann 2012 - 2013½). I also had a note left on my car with pictures of my sticker on two cars whose owners had seen mine and ordered a couple.
In neon red Idaho, of all places.
