By the time Nixon was elected to the white house Japan held the number 1 spot in motorcycle sales so by 1971 very few Motorcycle companies were left and Japan had no competitors left in the motorcycle Market. Same with Automobiles, where were the trade barriers while this was going on? The R's defanged them by allowing concessions to let Japan dump on the U.S. Hindsight is 20/20.
