Now please...let that be the last advice the nuclear apologists offer to those of us very-concerned DUers. I have family in Thailand, and that's just a good stiff wind away. You've been wrong every step of the way, and now your latest "it could never happen" happy talk appears to have been wrong again. So please, just stop trying to tell me everything is okay.

20. Has anyone tried to tell us that cracked doesn't really mean breached yet?
That's the sort of BS I have come to expect from the nuclear disaster apologists.

There needs to also be a rational side to thought, that looks at situations without panic.

For example, I am due beer and travel money, and many experiences, do I panic, no, do I worry no, do I do what I can to try and make such a thing part of the best actions, yes. And know that beer and travel money will be sent.

8. LATimes Nuclear reactor containment vessel may be damaged
http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-japan-reactor-damage-20110314,0,5884491.story

The explosion at the Unit 2 reactor just after 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, however, occurred very close to the reactor's suppression pool. The suppression pool is a donut-shaped unit at the bottom of the reactor that quenches excess steam beyond that needed for the generation of electricity.

There have been reports that the walls of the suppression pool may have been cracked or otherwise breached, which could represent a major escalation of the crisis, said Victor Gilinsky, a former Nuclear Regulatory Commission member who has a doctorate in physics from Caltech.

"If that is true, then there is a path to the control room, the workers and the outside environment," Gilinsky said.

I think the technical updates are pretty accurate so far. But keep in mind the NEI is pro-nuke.

11. FWIW
If the containment vessel were indeed cracked you see readings of 200,000 miiliservs/hour. Not the 400 milliservs/hour we are currently getting.

23. The 400 milliservs/hr WHO is getting? I'm not getting that reading.
Edited on Mon Mar-14-11 10:39 PM by Atman
What I'm reading are stories of high radiation rates already reported in Tokyo and a panicked government spokesman telling people to beat feet -- all while NOT reporting ANY milliserv/hr readings. The numbers you post are meaningless bs, considering the source (the Japanese govt). Tell me, do you work for the nuclear industry or industry pr company, or do you simply love nukes? What's your angle? How can you not see that we are in a place where man has never gone before. Sorry to be mellowdramatic, but the same words can be used for good stuff too, like moon landings. Point being, we don't know what is actually happening. Your PR campaign only serves to make you seem to be the Baghdad Bob of the nuke industry.

fiction writers were not even able to keep up with reality.

Did you see the blinking LED lights? I mean, a fiction writer's limits are only his/jer imagination yet they can't out predict 50 years, more less Star Date 2500.

18. I also have family in Thailand..
..and lived there for a long time myself.

While things look increasingly dire for the reactors and the perhaps the immediate surrounding areas in Japan, even in a worst case scenario I see little to no reason for Thai's or anyone living in Thailand to worry too much. Your family will be fine.

Mai pen rai, at least for now.

Thank you for the encouraging words. Its just that Thailand doesn't look that far away from Japan on a map when you consider how far the Chernobyl clouds were carried. But I guess Thailand really is pretty far away, and I have no idea which way the prevailing winds blow.

Like you, I'm just heartsick for all the victims of the earthquake/tsunami, and the future victims of Fukushima.

22. Here's some soon-to-be legendary quotes from nuclear experts:
Edited on Mon Mar-14-11 10:38 PM by brentspeak
made just prior to news that reactor #2's containment vessel has been damaged:

http://news.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view/2011_0313expert_nuclear_trouble_a_long_way_from_chernobyl/

“This is not, and will not be, Chernobyl under any stretch of the imagination. That’s good news,” said Lisbeth Gronlund, a senior scientist and co-director of the Global Security Program at the Cambridge-based Union of Concerned Scientists. “There was no containment vessel in Chernobyl.”

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/world/2011/0315/1224292164750.html

“Even if there was a fuel melt this doesn’t mean we would have a catastrophe,” she said. All modern reactors are protected by a containment vessel, a combination of thick concrete and steel strong enough to deal with radiation discharges or even explosions in the reactor."
