4. I am somewhat perplexed
There are certainly Japanese ports in operation - they are all over the country, not just in the area of the quake/tsunami. I've seen messages from Japanese acquaintances on other messageboards around the intertubes who say that Tokyo is functioning more or less normally save for slightly worse traffic than usual. So why are the stores in other parts of Japan empty. That there would be significant problems in the affected area only makes sense, but why so hundreds of miles away?

5. There have been runs on food, water and emergency equipment
in Tokyo particularly, because the radiation could devastate Tokyo should the winds change and the radioactive fallout becomes more intense.
