Jim Cramer thinks Japanese Officials trying to save nuke plants for future use
Vs pouring concrete over the whole thing and shutting down the risk. Any truth to this?

7. But is there a larger but even more debilitating solution?
Do they think they can preserve the site and replace some parts?

31. I love to buy old nuke plants and part them out on Craigslist.
Somebody always needs a heat exchanger or containment vessel for a 1972 200GW plant, and who wants to buy aftermarket when you can get a solid used part?

36. You, too? Cool!
I still have problems shipping those really brittle stainless tubes that exited the reactor. The good thing is, you can cut and weld them in the dark. They glow so nicely, that it saves on artificial lighting.

43. A word to the wise, though.
I *thought* that was getting a good deal on a 'slightly used' 50,000 gpm turbopump that had 'some pitting' due to 'minor radionucleide contamination', and got totally ripped off.

'Minor pitting' turned out to be a gaping three meter hole, and if that pump was 'slightly used', it had been 'slightly used' during the Manhattan project.

Thing was a museum piece.

I gave that guy a bad review...Mahmoud Ahmadinesomething or other.

Just a heads up.

22. Politics and economics may result in new reactors being built but these are finished.
It would be like saying BP is going to raise the Deep Water Horizon from the bottom of the ocean, repair it and then use it to to drill some new wells.

Of course BP will advocate drilling but that well platform is finished. These reactors are finished. 5, and 6 likely will be operated, 5 is questionable. Very hard to certify a structure after an explosion even if it is rebuilt. Japan is building two new plants 7 & 8 and that may continue but these 3 reactors are dead.

The economic cost to rebuild them would be staggering likely more expensive than simply building a new modern plant with better safety, higher output, and more efficient operation.

5. Cramer is talking out his ass, again.
The Japanese know that the reactors are now trashed. The reason they haven't poured concrete over them is because it's not a good idea to pour concrete over an ongoing meltdown, not to mention that given the state of Japan's current infrastructure, I doubt that they can get that much concrete.

23. Definitely a Dem.
CRAMER: Oh, thank you, Rob. A pleasure to be here.

GRAHAM: The view from up here, Jim, is that George W. Bush is in for quite a fight to stay in the White House. Is that an accurate view and if so, from an investing point of view, is it a troubling view?

CRAMER: I’m going to say yes to both of those. I think he is in trouble and I think that it could be trouble for the market because there is one thing that Bush has done and done well, which is make it so that if you’re rich, you should put your money in the stock market because you just get great tax breaks.

You get great tax breaks from dividends, great capital gains tax breaks, and that’s something that most people who aren’t rich can’t really take advantage of. And that environment will definitely change if Senator Kerry gets in.

GRAHAM: If the Democrats do take office, how will the markets react? I know there’s always the initial knee-jerk reaction.

They will probably pull back a little bit, but over the long haul, would the landscape really change that much for investors?

CRAMER: No, I don’t think so but I think that it’s the devil you don’t know.

I think that what would happen is people would say well, Kerry is going to come in and with guns blazing against the pharmaceuticals, maybe rewrite some of the medicare bill which was basically written by the drug companies.

Maybe he will create some distance and raise capital gains so that you would want to sell stock now because the capital gains rate is going to go up.

I envision those things occurring. I am a Democrat though and feel that Kerry would in the end surprise you and be a lot more like Clinton, which was a fabulous time to own stocks.

This is a last-ditch effort to try to prevent future even-more-horrible catastrophes, NOT to save the plants for future energy generation.

Cramer, as usual, is an idiot.

21. No Jim Crammer is an idiot.
When any large industrial structure (including a reactor) parts are built and certified for a particular stress. Say a valve is rated for 5000psi, a load bearing beam for 20 tons, etc.

The plant has been exposed to earthquake beyond tolerances, flooding, explosions, multiple fires, radioactive contamination, and corrosive seawater.

Pumps, valves, actuators, and other equipment have been used in an adhoc fashion in ways other than they were designed (to facilitate direct seawater injection). The RPV has undergone extreme stress far beyond rated operation.

No manufacturer is going to stand behind parts after that. All 3 plants are a total loss. As soon as the hydrogen explosions and seawater injection happened their fates were sealed.

If I Had the Ear of the Prime Minister, I Would Recommend the "Chernobyl Option"
Michio Kaku on March 15, 2011, 12:17 PM

The situation in Japan, as of Tuesday morning, keeps getting worse. We are getting close to the point of no return (the point where we have uncontrolled releases of radiation due to breach of containment)...

If I had the ear of the Prime Minister, I would recommend the "Chernobyl Option."
* Put the Japanese Air Force on alert
* Assemble a huge fleet of helicopters. Put shielding underneath them.
* Accumulate enough sand, boric acid, and concrete to smother these reactors, to entomb them forever.

This is what the Soviets did in 1986, calling out the Red Air Force and sandbagging the reactor with over 5,000 tons of concrete and sand. We have not yet hit the point of no return. But when we do, I think the only option left is this one.
