After Thanking God for the Japan Quake, A Troll Comes Clean
By John Hudson 09:46 AM ET

The young woman who took YouTube by storm Monday by praising God for the death of Japan's "atheist" earthquake victims has come clean."I've been making troll videos for a while now," said YouTube user Tamtampamela. "But this last one seems to have pissed off a lot of people."

Indeed it did. In her video, she had said, "God is such an amazing God, he is so good and so loving and it's amazing to see how fast God answers prayers sometimes. On Wednesday at the start of Lent, believers all over the world came together and we have been praying specifically for God to open the eyes of atheists all over the world... And just a few days, not even a few days later, God shook the country of Japan. He literally grabbed the country by the shoulders and said 'Hey look, I'm here.'

By Monday evening, Tamtampamela's atheist-bashing rant had spread rapidly across Twitter and Youtube and on sites such as Vanity Fair, Gawker, Perez Hilton, Richard Dawkins, The Miami New Times, and the Examiner. Each time shared with more outrage and astonishment at how an affable, soft-spoken young woman could be so calous as to praise God for the devastating quake. "Words cannot properly describe how disturbed we are by this video," wrote Perez Hilton. "Here are some of your terrible citizens, America!" wrote Gawker's Richard Lawson.

But it was, of course, all an act. Over the last couple years, Tamtampamela has been one of the most-debated trolls on the Internet. Until early this morning she had a broad catalogue of fringe-Christian satire denouncing the "gay men" who listen to Lady Gaga, America's "anti-Christ" president Barack Obama and people who lie who ultimately will "burn in hell."

Poe's law
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poe's law, named after its author Nathan Poe, is an Internet adage reflecting the fact that without a clear indication of the author's intent, it is difficult or impossible to tell the difference between sincere extremism and the parody of extremism.<1><2>

The law and its meaning

Poe's law states:

“Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of fundamentalism that someone won't mistake for the real thing.”<3>

The core of Poe's law is that a parody of something is by nature extreme. That makes it impossible to differentiate from sincere extremism.<2>

A corollary of Poe's law is the reverse phenomenon: legitimate fundamentalist beliefs being mistaken for parody.<3>

18. If she did get death and rape threats, with her home address published, you could feel a bit sorry
Yes, she did bring hatred on herself, but that shouldn't extend to threats.

22. My son is 19 and of this ilk.
He will say the worst and most ridiculous stuff. He is just a stupid kid, who sees the world as a big cynical Simpson's episode and sometimes he with tell us about the dinosaurs living at the same time as people. Sometimes he will wish he was a woman so he could have a pregnancy pact with his friends. He is trying to rebel against peaceful, rational, gentle parents, what is the best way to hurt us? Oh yeah, be pig headed, Republican, fundamentalist, and irrational. We are 80's generation apathetic soft-shelled people, who maybe fucked up our kids by being too laid back. I believe he will attach a frontal lobe one day and be a good man, for now, he is looking for hysterics. Don't even get me started on his little sister who acts like she needs some meth by twitching and itching and begging kids in her lunch line to share what they are "holding". My mom knew NOTHING about my High School shenanigans.

When society has sunk so low that churches protest at children's' funerals, you can't parody that without making a clear distinction, there are simply no boundaries around logical or ethical reality.

Westboro Baptist Church protesting the funerals of the kids killed in Huntsville

Of course Pat Robertson wasn't joking either, when he judged the people of New York and New Orleans during their crisis-es.

Thanks for the thread, Ian David.

24. Civility and Research to Establish Context is Then Vital
Dear Ian-

I found this discussion topic surprising when I read it. Why? Because it demonstrates that you and I are pretty much on the same page politically and religiously. Yet you've listed me as a "Spammer And Other Wastes Of Skin".

I tried to communicate this to you, but not only did you not research me, you apparently blocked me so that we couldn't discuss this. You assumed it because a REAL troll misunderstood my tweet and said she admired me and wanted to follow me. I find @micheknows to be offensive and her tweets show an astonishing lack of compassion and grasp of facts. I'm frustrated and hurt that you would do this to me without engaging me. If you had, you would know that like you I voted for and continue to support Obama. If you had, you'd know that I support the Wisconsin demonstrators and have been watching it on The Uptake and on the #wiunion stream non-stop for two weeks. I am shocked by the despotic actions of Walker and his sycophant Senators. And I'm inspired, and awed by the people of Wisconsin, so much so that I donated $150 to both The Uptake and Recall of the GOP 8 efforts.

If I were placed on such a list by teajadists, I might nobly wear it. But I don't go on their hashtags or chat rooms to agitate them. That is not what I believe in. I am very angry that you did this to me and I could lash out and be sarcastic, but I won't because ***dang it all*** I just signed the Coffee Party Movement civility pledge.

I am respectfully asking you to take me off your "Waste of Skin" list (@faisslAZ). I know that people can be passionate about topics, but is it really fair to put people on a list with a name like this without doing your research?...or at all. I thought us progressives were supposed to be tolerant. I'm considering shutting down this Twitter account because I don't want this glaring at me on my display. That bugs the crap out of me because I had a good list of progressives and news organizations that I was following. And I had some funny, snarky tweets.

Thanks so much for your consideration in this matter,
Lisa - An Agnostic, Science-Loving, Progressive Who Has Pledged To Be Civil

25. Useless attention whore
Why do some people's entire lives seem to revolve around simply getting attention? Does she even care about how hurtful her words were, even if done in jest? People like her really piss me off. Put down your narcissistic need for attention and controversy and remember the damn people who died. I hope this follows her around for a long time.

26. This too shall pass.
If she was a sincere nut making a sincerely nutty youtube video saying horrible things... Guess what? I don't care. If she was pretending to be a nut and made a pretend nutty video saying horrible things. Hmmm... No, still don't care. Saying stupid things, no matter how stupid, didn't kill a single person in Japan or anywhere else.
