as we head into 6 or 7... "Fukushima is a triumph for nuke power: Build more reactors now!"
Japan's nuclear powerplants have performed magnificently in the face of a disaster hugely greater than they were designed to withstand, remaining entirely safe throughout and sustaining only minor damage

1. If nuclear reactors are so safe, why did someone come up with
a scale to measure accidents at nuclear reactors?

5. I had to post the entire fist paragraph - it's a real weiner!
Japan's nuclear powerplants have performed magnificently in the face of a disaster hugely greater than they were designed to withstand, remaining entirely safe throughout and sustaining only minor damage. The unfolding Fukushima story has enormously strengthened the case for advanced nations – including Japan – to build more nuclear powerplants, in the knowledge that no imaginable disaster can result in serious problems.

7. They have a point...
...the plant have been shaken, flooded and exploded. It is rather amazing it is holding together as well as it does.

If they had tsunami-secured their emergency power systems there might not have been a Fukushima disaster.

11. Holding together?
An explosion now means it is 'holding together'?

Orwell is spinning in his grave.

I mean, heck, explosions at nuke plants are normal, right?

Yes holding, it is not as if they are radioactive rubble piles - yet.

17. Did you see the explosions?
When you see explosions, it means it has exploded and it is not holding together.
It means it has blown apart.
It means it is not holding together.

The radiation is expanding. It was holding together. It is no longer holding together.

19. Yes I did.
It was amazing that the containment held! Dont be so fixated on spectacular pictures that you lose sight of what is actually going on.
The far more serious blast seems to be the one that took place apparently inside the containment on reactor 2, and even there the faliure does not seem to be total.

23. Actually...
...the fact that the radiation levels have dropped down after each blast and each steam release indicates that they are still holding.

12. bp had an oil well disaster due entirely to greed-inspired negligence
a bunch of people died on scene, an entire ecosystem was turned into a disaster area, billions upon billions of innocent peoples' businesses and properties decimated, our food supply corrupted, and the death toll and health toll unknown and ongoing.

but hey, we got a token, temporary, limited moratorium.

drill, baby, drill!

16. Beyond the fact that the author is an obvious shill for nuclear power...
the biggest fallacy of this editorial is the assumption that because the safety procedures appear to have worked perfectly (his view, certainly not mine), that is evidence that the procedures will work perfectly every single time there is an event.

24. El Reg is terrible for Environment and Nuke stories
Louis Page denies climate change and thinks NPower stations are the finest thing since sliced bread. He is actually a terrible embarrassment to what is otherwise a fine site.
