Whoops: Gingrich praises NAFTA for shipping out American jobs

Appearing on a conservative talk radio program, Gingrich praised the Clinton-era North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), taking the decidedly internationalist view that it was positive because it created jobs in Mexico.

"Back in the 90s I remember Ross Perot saying that there was going to be the giant sucking sound of jobs if NAFTA passed," the caller said. "I think it ended up being true, right? And I know you were a big free trader."

Gingrich replied that it was not true -- at least, not for Mexico.

"Yeah, well, I don’t think it was true in Mexico," he said. "I think the fact is that NAFTA allowed us to build jobs in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, in competition with China. I mean, our big competitor is not Mexico. Our big competitor is China and India. And I’d rather have jobs close to the United States than have jobs overseas in places like China and India."

Money and influence talks and "normal" rides Discovery, apparently.

Yeah, and he's wrong wrong WRONG on SHAFTA, which killed progress, prosperity and environments of ALL nations involved while making oligarchs richer.

3. Uh, Newt?
That's just what Perot was talking about: Jobs going from the U.S. to Mexico under NAFTA. And whether it's someone in Mexico or in China, the loss of the job in the U.S. is still a loss of the job in the U.S. Even if the person doing that job is really, really close to the U.S. It still doesn't help the guy in Iowa or Arizona or North Carolina who's lost his job.

By the way, how are those side agreements on labor and the environment coming along? It's been 16 years, and we're still waiting.

6. Most Americans oppose this kind of "free trade". Why are they being ignored???
Why aren't we MOBILIZING?

Every time this subject comes up it sinks to the bottom of every discussion forum. Yet 80% of Americans want jobs to stop going overseas. 80%!

Yet no one is mobilized. What the f%$k.

7. Scum. Bag. Hypocrite. Slime
NAFTA should never have passed. Another really big "bipartisan" mistake that has doomed the generation of my kids.

Fucker.
