also, there was the mayor of one of the towns in the area, minami-? (didn't catch second half) who said:

- the news had it wrong, they do have access to water & power, but
- they need gasoline & daily supplies - no gas whatsoever, so can't evacuate even if they want to -
- they want authorities to come and see the situation of the people

4. Thanks Hannah
Tried to go to NHK, but had too many windows open and computer froze.
Just got back online.

Very bad news on not having gas to evacuate.

5. it was my impression that those folks were in the 20-30 km area --
but too fast to listen, process & type everything that was said, so can't be sure.

but definitely said they needed supplies for the shelters, just not water & electricity as previously reported by media.

6. The only town I found on a quick search was
Minamisanriku, which is much farther north, though the description would fit it in terms of urgent need.

Otherwise, I found a wikileak that states: Minami (kanji 南, hiragana みなみ) is a Japanese word meaning "south".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minami

It lists quite a few neighborhoods that are in southern parts of towns.
