JAPAN-Good News: Minamisanriku - 2,000 People "missing & presumed dead" Located In Surrounding Towns

Certainties of Modern Life Upended in Japan

The Miyagi prefectural government said Tuesday that search teams had located 2,000 people in Minamisanriku who had been missing and presumed dead. They had fled to surrounding towns as the tsunami bashed the coastal areas of the town.

just seeing a thread here yesterday whose OP featured two photos of people with their pets. My God - the anguish! One little old man was sobbing as a rescue worker handed him his dog, and a woman was bent over tightly clutching her cat. I can't help but wonder about those people - and if that precious pet was perhaps all either of them had left, out of all this. The look on that sobbing old man's face, even in profile - shit, I'm getting teary-eyed again just writing about it. I found several other photos of a similar nature - people clinging to their pets like that's all there is, and you know deep-down that probably IS all they have left. Just rips your heart out.
