RABAT, March 15 (Reuters) - An opposition Libyan online newspaper on Tuesday said a rebel MiG 23 warplane and a helicopter sank two pro-Gaddafi warships off the eastern coast near the front line of land battles at Adjabiyah.

It was not clear where the two aircraft took off from. The airbase at Benghazi switched to rebel control when the opposition took charge of the city and several air force officers have been among military men who joined the opposition.

While Gaddafi spoke, protestors in Benghazi threw shoes

"One month ago (Western countries) were sooo nice, so nice like pussycats," Saif says in a contemptuous sing-song tone."Now they want to be really aggressive like tigers. (But) soon they will come back, and cut oil deals, contracts. We know this game." - http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2058389,00.html">Saif Gaddafi

(Yeah, Saif, as if you weren't "cutting oil deals, contracts" with western states.)

http://blogs.aljazeera.net/live/africa/libya-live-blog-march-10-0">March 10 7:28pm Saif al Islam Gaddafi says "the time has come for full-scale military action" against Libyan rebels. He goes on to say that Libyan forces loyal to his family "will never surrender, even if western powers intervene".

And so it began.

http://english.aljazeera.net/video/europe/2011/03/2011310193023263578.html">France recognises Libya opposition: France has now officially recognised the National Council, the alternative government set up by the Libyan opposition in Benghazi, and has severed ties with Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

Reports from France, meanwhile, indicate that Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, is also considering lobbying the EU to back air strikes against specific targets in Libya.

Al Jazeera's Tim Friend reports from Paris.

7. Injuries from fighter crash
01:14 Almanara Media reports that two people of “importance” have been badly injured as a result of the fighter jet crash into Baab Al Aziziyah earlier and have been taken to Tripoli’s Burns and Reconstruction hospital. There is currently a heavy presence of security around the building and unconfirmed reports point to the injured being from Gaddafi’s sons.

10. the rebels now have planes and pilots
the kamikaze story certainly is plausable.

from aljazeera:

4:30pm
Anti-government activists said that rebels commanding fighter jets have destroyed two of Gaddafi's warships off the northeast coast of Ajdabiya.

The opposition also claimed to have hit a third naval ship in the air attack, according to opposition website Libya al-Youm.

A number of army generals and soldiers, particularly in the Libyan Air Force, have defected to join the rebels and have an arsenal of weapons and fighter jets at their disposal.

The alleged attack comes as Gaddafi's forces continue to battle for control of Ajdabiya and the nearby city of Brega in order to advance on to the opposition stronghold of Benghazi.

A trusted source has confirmed to us this story: The pilot who flew his plane into Bab Al Aziziyah took off as part of a 2 plane team with the mission of bombing strategic points in Al Guradibya base in Sirte. Their orders were to return immedietly after completing the mission. One pilot followed orders while the other flew to Tripoli where he emptied what he had left of ammunition on Bab Al Aziziyah and then crashed his plane into it.

Remember, this is unconfirmed. I've been following this all day and constantly checking for some confirmation. Nothing. AJE's Tony Birtley mentioned ruimors of an attack on Gaddafi in his last video report from Benghazi (I posted it at the end of the last thread, and it's on AJE's blog). One print report also mentioned rumors of an attack, but there still has been no confirmation.

Edited to add:

Video of Tony Birtley reporting from Benghazi (ref. to rumor of attack on Gaddafi):

Libya update (3:33)

AND this ref. in an Australian news report:

At the same time, fireworks were seen exploding overhead amid rumours, later denied, that Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi's residence in Tripoli had been bombed.

35. Oops, LOL! Regime shows 'terrorist' to press, but..."I'm NOT Al Qaeda," he says.

Militant contradicts Libya's version of revolt

Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:29pm GMT

By Michael Georgy

TRIPOLI, March 15 (Reuters) - A rebel presented by Libya's government as proof of al Qaeda's role in the rebellion publicly denied any links to the group on Tuesday when foreign journalists met him in the capital Tripoli.

The government took a large group of reporters to meet the Libyan man, Salah Abu Obah, saying he was a militant involved in a four-week-old uprising against Muammar Gaddafi's 41-year rule.

"I can't believe I am sitting next to an al Qaeda affiliate," said a government spokesman, introducing the man sporting a beard and wearing a black sweatshirt with a hood.

Obah gave a different account of himself. "I am not a member of al Qaeda," he told reporters.

The spokesman appeared unmoved by the departure from plan and continued to translate his comments.

...

At the end of what would appear to have been a less than entirely successful exercise, Obah quietly left with his minder to return to his detention.

His minder may be sharing a cell with him tonight.

41. NYT on the fall of Ajdabiya (which the revolutionaries dispute):
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/16/world/africa/16libya.html?_r=3&pagewanted=2&hp">Qaddafi Forces Seize Another Rebel Stronghold
Iman Bugaighis, a professor who has become a spokeswoman for the rebels, lost her composure as she spoke about the recent death of a friend’s son, who died in battle last week. Her friend’s other son, a doctor, was still missing. Western nations, she said, had “lost any credibility.”

“I am not crying out of weakness,” she added. “I’ll stay here until the end. Libyans are brave. We will stand for what we believe in. But we will never forget the people who stood with us and the people who betrayed us.”

There were mixed signals about the prospects of Western military help. After a meeting of the Group of 8 foreign ministers in Paris, the French foreign minister, Alain Juppé, said he had been unable to secure agreement on the imposition of a no-flight zone. “If we had used military force last week to neutralize a certain number of airfields and the dozens of airplanes” available to Colonel Qaddafi, “perhaps the reversals suffered by the opposition would not have happened,” he said. “But that is the past.”

45. Laying aside, just for the moment, the humanitarian and political issues involved in all of this...
it is just so difficult to gauge the strategic and tactical considerations of the rebel forces.

Have they been holding these air assets in abeyance until Gadaffi's forces were stretched out along the road to Benghazi; have they been waiting for enough inner discontent with the regime in Sirte; have they given up on any intervention in the form of NFZ, and have now taken to the skies themselves?

The list of possible questions, and combinations of answers I suppose, is endless.

As one whose own military experience/role has left him with a lifelong interest in strategy and tactics, I admit (without forgetting or downplaying the human crisis involved) to having a real interest on how the rebels see the hand they hold, as opposed to that of their opponents.

I'm really hoping they are showing some sign of gaining combat discipline; difficult when you are dealing with fighters whose zeal outweighs their experience. Hopefully, those who have military training, or are defectors from Gaddafi's forces, are having some success in this.

Seeing them with an air arm, no matter how small, is certainly an unexpected, positive development (unexpected for me, anyway).

Interior minister disbands country's hated state security agency, which was accused of torture and human rights abuses.

Last Modified: 15 Mar 2011 20:58 GMT

Egypt's interior minister has disbanded the country's feared state security agency, which was accused of torture and human rights abuses during the 30-year rule of former president Hosni Mubarak.

Major General Mansour el-Essawy, a former Cairo security chief and the new interior minister, announced the dissolution of the security apparatus in a statement on Tuesday.

He said a new agency in charge of keeping national security and combatting terrorism will be formed "in line with the constitution and principles of human rights".

Officers for the new agency will be chosen in the coming few days, the statement said, adding that the new agency will "serve the country without intervening in the lives of citizens while they practice their rights and political life".
