Ok I an not the only "fool" stocking up on milk
I went to the local store and who is there? The same retired submarine captain I met yesterday. We split the milk. He is getting it for his grand kids mostly.

We just looked at each other and went... not good.

Oh and the cashiers looked at us as if we were crazy. We both got about three cases of 1 liter milk that lasts... we both considered the powdered, but that stuff justs tastes awful... On the bright side, I don't have to buy milk for a few months!

Easy for me to say, I'm lactose intolerant, but really soy butter instead of regular and almond milk with frozen fruit for smoothies is a great alternative. :hi:

as long as it's organic, but most of the brands we see in the grocery store are labeled as such. The kids like soy (vanilla) and that's what we use to cook with.

145. in 2007 over half the world's soy crop was genetically modified.
us is the biggest soy producer in the world & in 2010 93% of the us soy crop was GM v. 9% as recently as 1997.

One of the important GM varieties is the "Roundup Ready" soybean, engineered so that fields could be easily sprayed with roundup (Monsanto TM) for weed control.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soybean

3 global corporations control 65% of world soy exports. soy is vertically integrated & highly concentrated.

http://www.worldwatch.org/node/5468

the us dairy industry in comparison is much less so.

as a dietitian, i have often wondered where the sudden flood of studies & articles talking up the benefits of soy were coming from.

Or meat from grass fed cows?

The fact is, the majority of soy produced goes to feed cattle to be consumed by humans, not for making soy milk.

Not a lot of people do buy dairy or meat from grass-fed cows, but it doesn't change the fact that cows didn't evolve to properly digets soy and corn.

for it to be labeled organic it must be non-gmo by law. If people are opposed to using gmo soy, they shouldn't drink conventional cow's milk, that's for sure. That's ground zero for gmo soy.

Seriously, to hear people talk about radiation, you would think it was magic. That ANY amount will kill you, it never disperses, and it has infinite range. In real scientific terms, you might as well worry about suffering smoke inhalation from the volcano that's erupting in Japan right now.

221. Shhh the worry is not about YOUR PERSONAL DOSAGE, which will be VERY LOW
but it is WELL KNOWN that certain isotopes do concentrate into HIGHER LEVELS in cow's milk. You know this, so stop pretending. Chances is it will stay LOW... as in VERY LOW... but it is rational response NOT to take that risk

By the way... any exposure, regardless of what the media might tell you, or the industry for that matter is NOT safe. Not to say that REQUIRED X-RAYS should be avoided, they should not.

Do you want the studies to show to you that yes small exposures are not safe either?

JAYSUS there are days.

245. And it's still hysteria.
Iodine-131 is not going to waft 10,000 miles across the planet in anything approaching a dose measurable by anything other than the most sophisticated scientific equipment we have. The problems with iodine concentrating in cow's milk take place within a few hundred miles at most of the point of origin.

These concerns about radioactive death clouds seriously need to be knocked down. There are ridiculous maps going around online talking about 750 RAD radiation clouds reaching the US west coast in 10 days--such pseudoscience would be laughable if it weren't such a dangerous form of fearmongering.

301. Again you do not bring this gear out of storage just as a precaution
they expect radiation... (minor, as in measurable but really small) will be my expectation due to time distance.

But you do not bring them out. They are TESTED for background where they are for starters, not where they are being moved. They get broken out and tested once a year...

At this point I wish I did not write, helpt to, the addendum for the quake in TJ... yes the NUCLEAR one. (I mean we only have a small nuke plant up the road... San Onofre, so that city is one of the few that has a NUCLEAR addendum)

Oh and there is one more thing... since 9.11 trusting the EPA to tell you the truth and keep you abreast, unfortunately has become non-functional

Oh and watch what they do... not how safe and wonderful things will be here.

I am waiting for the EPA to start moving yellow ducky suits to the West Coast too. When they do that, if they even print it, it is more serious than they are telling you.

Again, I expect to get not even what I got when they took an X-Ray of my foot... not even that much... not even close to what would be needed to x-ray just my pinky... as in measurable but ridiculous low amounts (time\ distance) BUT you do not break that equipment just because.

degrades fairly fast, it also concentrates quite well in cows that eat the stuff with their feed.

California is downwind... so even if our dose will be very minimal, the cows will concentrate that form of iodine.

This will enter the food chain,

With all due respect, that's inconsistent logic.

A) Fukushima to LA = 5363 miles
B) LA to Madison = 1683 miles

So how exactly is it that radiation traveling over 3X the distance across the ocean is a cause for serious panic but the trip from LA to WI... not so much?

that said the FURTHER YOU ARE from the accident the lower it is going to get, the more diffused.

Oh and that mountain range may cause it to go into rain, washing it off the atmosphere.

Regardless the amount of rads in the West Coast to a person will be infinitesimal, but it WILL Concentrate on milk. That is WELL KNOWN.

Jesus you people need to get a chill. Getting milk is just a fucking precaution since it DOES CONCENTRATE IN MILK... your individual dose, even in California, will be above background but most likely barely measurable. BUT COWS can and will eat it.. and concentrate it to a slightly larger level where it could start to be important.

On entering the human body, it locates in muscle, where it can induce a malignant muscle cancer; a sarcoma.

Is 30 years. 50% will be gone in 30 years. 75% in 60. 87.5% in 90. 93.75% in 120. 96% in 150.

By that time, it's so spread out and so little, there is little danger. There is little danger in 120.

Strontium 90 is 28 years.

58. Chernobyl redux.
Not 100% sure of the facts, but I believe:

Radioactive cesium acts, chemically, like calcium in chemical reactions. When it falls to the ground, it lands on the grass and is eaten by animals and gets into your milk by replacing calcium.

This particular scenario is what led to the mass slaughter of reindeer and dairy herds in Eastern Europe after Chernobyl.

That milk might be worth a whole lot more in a couple of weeks, whether or not any radioactive material makes it to our west coast.

Also known colloquially as long lasting milk. I have some in my cupboard right now, actually tastes pretty good. And at £1.06 per litre it's slightly less expensive than good milk in the states.

Here's to hoping that a radioactive cloud doesn't reach the west coast of the US, or anywhere for that matter. After Chernobyl a radioactive cloud passed over Britain and on that same day it rained in some parts of Wales. From what I've heard milk production in that area was halted for years after, hence OP's concern.

Parmalat is the only brand I've seen and it runs about $4.50 a quart (by comparison, I can get a gallon {4 quarts} of ORGANIC fresh milk for $5)

38. Long-life mik in Tetrapak containers. It lasts about a year
It's been readily available in the UK/Europe since before I left in 1980. Here it is difficult to get, but they sell it locally here because we are in a very rural location. We always have a few on hand as we are 25km from the nearest store.

No refrigeration needed and tastes exactly the same as regular milk. They sell soups, stocks, gravies in the same 'Tetrapacks' you must have seen them on the shelves?

88. Did you buy at a commissary?
As I posted upstream, I've seen Parmalot quarts on occasion for about $4.25 or so, which is really expensive when you think that you could buy a gallon of fresh organic for $5--- making UHT milk about $17/gallon.

12. The radiation will enter the food chain that way
the radioactive iodine concentrates on milk the west coast is a milk producing area.

Worst case, we will have milk that has it... why I just got the version that last three months, cases of the stuff.

That would start in five to seven days from now, up to ten from the first release.

It should be a very low... I wish I did not know this crap by the way.

But the fires at reactor four are releasing radiation...

There are some serious jackasses on this website now....if it makes you feel better, a long time ago a friend opened a bar in Charlotte, NC. When the reviewer from paper showed up to review it, he asked our friend how business was. That's how this place is now.

Does wind-blown radiation ruin coats in Alaska quicker than elsewhere?

Is it because it's colder in Alaska, and people wear their coats longer, so they'll need to be decontaminated more frequently?

Should Sarah Palin call out the ANG?

Stay tuned until next week, when all of these questions, and more, will be answered in the next installment of "The Historian"!!!!

And now, a word from our sponsor, Gently Glowing Dairy, whose dairy products have a long shelf-life due to being naturally irradiated.

101. drain off less water after boiling the potatoes
and turn on the electric mixer and whip them up with the excess water (the excess water=milk; lowfat, etc.). They will keep in the refrigerator for several days if properly sealed. Reheat them in the over or fry them up again later if you like.

Just say no to milk.

You could always add some dry powdered milk to it. I often cook with powdered milk because it is convenient in cooking. However, I cannot stand the taste of it.

I also do this with buttermilk - cook with it but will not drink a glass of the powdered stuff. :puke:

140. Would plain Coffee Mate work for you?
My hubby had to give up using milk in coffee and made the switch. Seems pretty creamy tasting. I realize the contents of these non dairy products can be hair raising. But you make the choices that work.

My folks used to keep powdered milk around and just use a lot in a cup of coffee. Yes, it tastes different. But it's not altogether bad and kind of creamy if you use a couple of spoonfuls.

and really likes their milk... I find the discussion interesting, because given I live in Colorado, I always stock non-perishables. Between blizzards in the winter and thunderstorms/tornadoes in spring/summer, power outages are not all that rare. Since I too am a real latte "junkie," I was curious if they had found the UHT long life milk at a reasonable price anywhere. Oh, and if you are curious, I can heat water on a propane camp stove, and have a hand pump type espresso maker that works anywhere. That and a battery operated milk frother and I can "feed" my addiction just about anywhere. ;)

Seriously, though, I'm not concerned for myself at this point, but can understand why those in HI and CA coast might be looking at the possibilities a bit more closely.

169. Looks like this...

Comes in quart size packages like oversized juice boxes but can remain (unopened) and unrefrigerated up to a year... lasts longer once refrigerated as well. Much better than canned milk and don't even get me started with powder (yuck). They sell whole milk, 2%, 1% and fat free, though finding a specific type can be tricky.

I find it at some whole Foods (very expensive) and for about $4.50/quart at some local grocery stores... You can buy online, but the shipping is outrageous. Nice to have a couple in the cupboard, though. ;)

176. I think the OP is worried about the jet stream.
In WWII, the Japanese floated bombs on balloons in the jet stream and hit five or six targets on the West Coast. Cheap and not detectable by radar.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_balloon

So theoretically radioactive particles could travel on the jet stream and impact the West Coast.

I went to the local store and who is there? The same retired submarine captain I met yesterday, along with his wife the brain surgeon, the movie star, the Professor and Marry Ann. We split the snack food aisle. He is getting it for his grand kids mostly.

We just looked at each other and went... not good. DON'T BUY SNACKS FROM THE WEST COAST!

I walked up tpo the cashiers and they looked at me funny with my three carts loads of Cheetos and Twinkies. I just pointed them to the ghost of Carl Sagan, who said "Bilions and billions of radioactive particles with make snack foods unsafe!"

In any case, I won't have to buy Snack foods for months!
So party at my place! Just remember, BYOGC: Bring Your Own Geiger Counter!

did you know that the higher the milk fat ( whole, 2 percent or 1 percent ) the lowest the shelf-life it had? If you keep 1% in your refrigerator it will keep longer than if you have a gallon of whole milk in there? I never really experimented with it, but I've kept 1% in my fridge for what seems to be almost two weeks (after buy-on date) and the stuff is just fine....

then again, my grandmother used to buy the cartons and freeze them...thus eliminating this scenario

Let me know if you had the same experience I have..as far as 1% keeping longer than whole milk ( or, if you have a whole-milk product in your fridge ) I really think the fat content has something to do with it :-)

How you doin, by the way? :pals:

Remember all those "fallout shelters" in schools and other buildings, back during the Cold War? I don't think they're going to revive those any time soon.

Although, having said that, I think everyone should keep a well-stocked disaster shelter at all times (replace those drinks and cans of food biannually--eww). And no, I'm not being sarcastic, nor am I becoming a paranoid kook. Nuclear radiation is uncommon, but still looms as a possibility, and there are all sorts of other catastrophes that make having such a shelter prudent. Here in the middle of Oklahoma, I'd certainly prefer having something underground to run to, should an F5 tornado head my way!

Canned and dry milk, tuna, canned veggies... don't forget you can drink the liquid in those cans or add it to soup.

I'm thinking in terms of earthquakes too, as I know you are since we share a coast. I need some camping equipment anyway, so I'm going to look at camp stoves and lanterns. I hear there are battery powered lanterns that last a very long time now. I might pick a few up for work too.

We got an emergency radio that has a crank to charge it up, a built in solar panel on top and a flashlight on the side with an emergency red flasher.

We got that when we were hit by a micro burst a few summers ago. That storm took out a mature cottonwood tree in our backyard. Things were pretty severe in the neighborhood with power lines down. We had lots of battery powered flashlights of all kinds. But got this one with some banking points since it has the crank charge. I thought you could also charge up a cell phone but can't seem to find that on the radio. Will need to check out the booklet to find it.

but, why the mocking of someone simply stocking up on non-perishables, including long-storage milk as a precaution?

Even if nothing had happened in Japan there are lots of reasons to routinely maintain an "emergency" kit of supplies. I don't live in an earthquake prone area, but many do. For me in Colorado, such supplies are sometimes needed to offset power outages from winter storms or spring/summer tornadoes/thunderstorms.

But, even as we direct our concern to those in Japan most directly affected, there is some small possibility for impacts beyond, particularly for Hawaii, Alaska and US west coast, but extremely unlikely elsewhere. Taking that possibility-- however small-- as an impetus to check those routine emergency kits/supplies doesn't seem like such a extreme thing to do. Why are some construing that as panic?

Periodically stock up on certain items anyway.
Always keep sardines and crackers on hand ( reminds me, need to restock crackers) since I can open and eat. No need to heat them. And I snack on them anyway sometimes, so rotate them out - though I do miss the brisling sardines in olive oil. They've changed to canola or something and the flavor took a hit.

My ex-hubbies grandmother grew up poor in Scotland, then went through very tough times in the Depression and always kept lots (way more than I ever do) of non-perishables on hand. She'd been there, gone through that and made sure she and hers wouldn't be there in future. She also had ducks (though she lived in urban Orange County, CA) and yummy, those were good eggs.

But yeah, you seemed to have poked a tender spot on some, way more than merited by your OP to my mind.

359. Stocking up now seems reasonable.
Stocking up later if things got really bad would be considered hoarding, so better to buy bulk now.

We see that happening here in Hong Kong with Japanese powdered milk. People still don't trust Chinese milk since the melamine scandal so they've been buying Japanese milk formula. Now with there being some doubt about future Japanese powdered milk the shelves were emptied immediately and the stores had to start limiting purchases.

Radiation fears cause rush for Japanese milk formula
Ng Yuk-hang and Amy Nip
Updated on Mar 16, 2011

Customers in Hong Kong queued to buy Japanese milk formula and other food products yesterday in a rush to beat the potential effects of radiation contamination.

...About 700 people lined up outside a Japanese baby food shop in Prince Edward yesterday morning.

Each customer was allowed to buy no more than eight cans, but the stock was sold out by midday. One man who queued for 45 minutes with his two children, aged two and four, left with his full quota of 24 cans.

He said: "The milk formula that will arrive later might be contaminated. I worry that it will affect my children's health."

Bonjour Cosmetics, which also imports Japanese milk formula, said sales soared over the weekend.

Between Friday and Sunday, over 40,000 cans were sold in the city.
