why doesn't Japan nationalize the nuclear plants NOW?
CNN just reports that the PM is furious at the industry for not telling the situation openly.

Can't they nationalize the industry?

19. right.

It would be very difficult for the top level officials to engage in any face-saving antics if they were to just take over the entire situation... it's much nicer for the top-to-bottom face-saving structures to stay in place while the physical concrete and steel structures collapse.

3. Why didn't they do something before, when it might have meant more?
The PM will likely remain mad but do nothing about nationalization.

4. The owners would love that about now.
Get nationalized before the shit really hits the fan and have the government liable and take the blame.

5. Why do you assume nationalized nuclear plants...
...would be any better than what they have now?

Nationalizing things doesn't automatically make things better.

even if they kill people doing it.

It also applies in countries that use the metric system, not just here.

10. Well, that would be stupid.
Nationalize them now?

Yup, make this all the government's responsibility (which in effect it probably is anyway) AFTER the thing has gone into total meltdown and crisis?!

Hell, no ... if I were the Japanese government I'd want to make sure that the industry was held liable and responsible to their very last yen.

16. The PM takes the fall in the end for the thousands of years that the N. of Japan
is uninhabitable, should the worst happen.

He must have resources on this instead of dumping it on the company.
