Contrasts in culture
Japanese citizens waiting patiently in line for supplies. No looting. Few public displays of emotion.

Japanese officials giving evasive, sugarcoated information. Few reports - incommunicative.

IMO both would be different in the US.

1. The waiting in line would definitely not happen unless
there was a rock concert happening. Well none of it.

5. For Katrina
I remember the local officials as having many more pressers, information of where to go, supplies, etc. Of course Brownie and FEMA didn't have a clue.

In fairness this is an entirely different magnitude.

6. Yeah, I've been noticing that too, seems there's a feeling of where're all in this
together, so let's try to get through it... I've not see even any acts of rudeness, just watching on the TV. We were talking here today at home about it and someone pointed out that the Japanese officials might be evasive since they really don't know WTF to do next, there are sooooo many calamities at once. It's almost like a Stephen King novel. Also, the outfit running the plants does not seem above board IMO.

7. Not that ours are much better
but I would expect a higher degree of candidness. Maybe we have a more litigious society to thank for that.
