Miami-Dade County voters recalled their top elected official Tuesday, culminating an effort financed by a billionaire car dealer and fueled by frustrations over a poor economy and unpopular policy decisions.

Some 88% of 200,347 voters elected to oust Republican Carlos Alvarez, with 707 of 829 precincts reporting, along with early and absentee ballots

Mr. Alvarez easily won re-election in 2008 as mayor of Miami-Dade, the county of 2.5 million residents that includes the city of Miami. But a recall effort gained momentum last fall when he agreed to a budget that raised the county's property taxes while increasing pay to unionized public employees.

1. The beginning of recalling mayors who raise taxes to cover shortfalls? Could be.

This wasn't a victory for our side, even if he does carry an (R) behind his name. His replacement is not likely to be an improvement.

3. It will discourage others from raising necessary taxes.

And proves once again that we need to decrease the power of our billionaires.

It is interesting to note that this was the second recall effort. The first one ran out of money. Get a billionaire on your side, and you are golden. GOLDEN I tell you.

and it only takes 200,000 to give a guy the boot. Hmmm....

Hopefully this doesn't delay the metrorail extension to Miami International Airport. It looks like they are almost done.
