Calm Amidst Desolation - Ofunato

Japanese tsunami survivors getting a bowl of dry rice per meal, including babies - that's it
by John Aravosis (DC) on 3/16/2011 01:30:00 PM

One of the better reports I've seen coming out of Japan.

Most people seem to think that Japan is equally wealthy and prosperous, but it's not true. There is pretty extreme poverty in parts of the country, usually observed the further north/south you get away from Tokyo and Osaka.

2. Please don't think I'm being cruel but that's very good considering the incredible destruction...
...wrought. My god, by no means is that meant to imply they are getting enough to eat, but at least they have some kind of subsistence food. I am still worried that after a few weeks they might not be able to provide that. That and clean drinking water.

My thoughts are with them during this grim time when both the hand of nature and man have turned against a huge portion of their populace.

5. Very misleading. One shelter, one story, one day.
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 01:26 PM by MineralMan
The implication from Aravosis is that everywhere in Japan, that's what people are getting and that's it. It's just plain misleading.

We have one reporter visiting one shelter on one day, and we don't even know which day it is.

Relief efforts take time to get established. I hate this kind of ugly nonsense from people who should know better. Feh!

John Aravosis should be ashamed of himself. I know he's not, though.

to improve the situation. Do you know?

There are plenty of stories available regarding relief to the victims of this unprecendented disaster. How about posting some of those?

power failures, and other problems have made delivery of supplies to some areas very difficult. Those problems are being solved and food and supplies are moving better today. In a disaster of this magnitude, problems with distribution of relief supplies always occur. If they did not, it would be a huge suprise. Shame on Aravosis for taking a single shelter on a single day and trying to expand that to imply that no relief is occurring. Seriously. Shame on him!
