Dad arrested on sex charges after daughter, who fled w/ uncle who allegedly abused her, was returnd
http://www.redding.com/news/2010/dec/24/jacob-berlinghoff-jailed-connection-sex-related-ch/

The father of a Redding teen who went missing for 31 days with her uncle was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of sex-related charges.

Jacob Daniel Berlinghoff, 33, of Redding was being held this morning at the Shasta County Jail in lieu of $50,000, said Sgt. Jim Beaupre of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested at 9:25 p.m. Thursday on suspicion of sexual battery, annoying a child, and lewd and lascivious behavior with a child under 14.

The arrest stems from an incident in fall 2008, but Beaupre didn’t go into further details in the Sheriff's Office press release. Detectives were not immediately available for comment this morning.

Charles David Berlinghoff, 44, of Los Angeles, Jacob Berlinghoff’s brother, faces sex-related charges of his own. Initially accused of keeping his niece from her parents for more than a month, he now faces nearly 100 felony counts. The Shasta County District Attorney’s office charged him Tuesday him with 30 counts of lewd acts with a minor, 30 counts of incest and 15 counts of oral copulation on top of 10 charges of providing lewd material to a minor and 10 charges of arranging a meeting with a minor for lewd purpose.

5. Out here (CA) many crimes are qualified by age.
Severity of the sentence is determined by the victim's age in many cases, and the age(s) are written right into the laws.

For example, molesting a child under the age of 12 brings far more serious consequences than if the child was 14 or 16 at the time of the crime.

I believe it was the case where the sicko had that girl in his backyard (with the children she bore) and was charged with a slew of crimes that were filed this way (qualified by age) because of all the time he held her captive.
