Baby dolphin found swimming next to dead mother rescued from Indian River Lagoon
CLEARWATER, Florida — A baby dolphin found swimming alongside its dead mother in Titusville has been rescued and is receiving care, including bottle feeding, at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
The dolphin was found earlier this month at the Indian River Lagoon. The calf, about two months old, was evaluated and transported in a dolphin ambulance to the Clearwater facility.
Steve McCulloch, founder of the Marine Mammal Research and Conservation program at Florida Atlantic University, says the dolphin is being bottle-fed every two hours.
McCulloch says the dolphin can't be released back into the wild, because it won't have learned necessary survival skills from its mother. It may eventually be put on public display, possibly with Winter, the beloved dolphin with a prosthetic tail.
