Buddy Roemer Maps RV Route to White House.

By Patrick O'Connor
Buddy Roemer wants to drive a Winnebago to the White House. Literally.

The former Louisiana governor said he plans to re-locate to New Hampshire and South Carolina full-time in the next few weeks as he explores a long-shot presidential bid.

Instead of an apartment in Charleston or a rental house on the shores of New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee, Mr. Roemer said, “I’ll live, literally, on some sort of little touring bus” while he drives – and walks – the length and breadth of the two early primary states.

Mr. Roemer, a former congressman who also served a single term as Louisiana’s governor, is positioning himself as the reform candidate in what could be a crowded Republican field.

1. It's been done.
U.S. Senator Fred Harris did it back in 1976.

3. I don't think that vehicle will suffice.
He is going to need this.

6. He was anti-public employee before it was cool
I'm a Louisiana state employee. I lost my job to his "Roemer Revolution" 22 years ago. He ran on the promise of reducing government by attrition, then, after taking office, decided layoffs were more expedient.

I was out of work for three weeks, and got paid for two of those. It was all a show. The papers ran with the story of the layoffs, but the re-hires flew under the radar. Within months, the state's government was larger than before. People still remember him as the guy who shrank the size of government (well, state employees don't).
