If you are wondering who the Heartland Institute is - Jay Lehr keeps popping up on all the right wing news shows to downplay the Japan nuclear crisis - check out this excellent blog - Cannonfire.

Lehr in action:

up against Wasserman:
"People are right to try and get it now," said Harvey Wassermann who has written and studied nuclear energy most of his life. "The government should be putting out millions of the caps because if that cloud comes here, and it will, people need to be protected."

"The people here have absolutely zero to worry about," said Jay Lehr, a PhD. in environmental science who speaks around the nation about science issues.

1. More on Jay Lehr
Edited on Thu Mar-17-11 10:35 AM by tlm16
Saw him on CNN last weekend and did some research. Seems he's even worse than your average think tank goon. He was a prominent well water geologist (that's what his PhD is in: Geologic Hydrology, or how to dig wells), helped write regs for the EPA. Until the late 80s when he was convicted and imprisoned for committing fraud against the EPA to the tune of $200,000 in false billing. Surprise, thereafter he became a libertarian activist against environmental legislation. People should really inform news orgs like MSNBC, Bloomberg, and CNN who keep putting him on air and deferring to his expertise.

The article is here: http://tomathon.com/mphp/2011/03/unrequested-fission-surplus-kent-brockman-meet-jay-lehr/|“Unrequested fission surplus”: Kent Brockman, meet Jay Lehr>

Hope it's helpful.

4. This is a good source of quotes
Lehr, post his conversion to Libertarianism, gave this speech at the "Property Rights Foundation of America" in 98. It's a wonderful source of really loony quotes, a psychologically kinda interesting. He describes himself as "Left of Ted Kennedy" but still thinks that the Clinton administration was leading "a resurgence for socialism and central government control that wishes to eradicate all of your rights and in greater strength than we have seen in many a decade, in greater strength than Stalin had in Russia or Hitler had in Germany."

Loves DDT, Asbestos, Radon. Pretty much if it was discovered to have been dangerous after he graduated college, it's part of a socialist plot.

Someone could pull some of the best quotes and create a press release that is sent to news organizations.
