Fortunately for three puppies, Jason Grendziak was in the right place at the right time.
At the end of January in near-blizzard conditions, Grendziak was working his every-other-week garbage collection route in southern Door County for Veolia Environmental Services. Making a turnaround at about 6:30 a.m., a box on the side of the road and a flash of movement caught his attention. Grendziak decided to stop and take a look, and what he found took him by surprise: Three half-frozen puppies were huddled together in the box that was frozen to the ground.
"I could tell they were there for more than a few hours. They looked like shivering snowballs more than they looked like dogs," Grendziak said. "I couldn't leave them. I have a dog myself, and I don't think they would have lasted another day with the weather and birds of prey ... I had to bring them with me." After the pups warmed up on the floorboard of his truck, Grendziak found a box along his route to tuck them in and then shared cookies from his lunch box with the hungry guests.
After a few more stops, Grendziak called his boss, who came to take the dogs to the office. After checking with the Door County Humane Society and a few neighbors in the area where the dogs were found, a co-worker, John Nessinger, came forward to offer to find homes for the puppies.

"I am just amazed that they survived. The low was 19 degrees that night. Probably being huddled together was the only thing that kept them alive," Chase said.
