IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa officials say they have concluded an internal investigation into the use of a baby monitor to eavesdrop on staff at a medical clinic, and that two employees were disciplined as a result.
Tysen Kendig, UI vice president for strategic communications, Thursday released a statement saying two UI Hospitals and Clinics staff members involved in the incident were disciplined. But officials declined to discuss specifics.
“University of Iowa Health Care has completed its internal investigation into the monitoring of staff interactions at UIHC. Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken against two UIHC staff members involved in the incident. Details of that disciplinary action are considered confidential personnel information,” the statement says.
UI officials have declined to identify the employees involved. But John Stellmach, president of AFSCME Local 12, a union representing about 5,000 UI employees, said the supervisor of the workers in the front desk area where the baby monitor was found was Pam Snider, and that the human resources representative contacted by Snider before she placed the monitor was Glenn Kell. Stellmach has been speaking on behalf of the three clerks and two secretaries of the urology department who complained after finding the baby monitor in their work area Monday morning.
When asked about the employment status of Kell and Snider, Kendig confirmed Thursday Kell was on unpaid leave, but Kendig would not discuss terms of that leave. Kendig said Snider’s employment with the UI, which started in January 1992, ended Thursday.
