Schoolboys suspended for possession of oregano

CHESAPEAKE

It was an Italian spice that got Adam Grass suspended from the seventh grade at Hickory Middle School on Thursday, according to his father, Patrick Grass.

It was oregano, contained in a plastic baggie so it resembled marijuana.

The school called it an "imitation controlled substance," which is prohibited under division policy. Even though Adam didn't bring it to school, and was just passing it from one student to another, he was suspended for 10 days and recommended for expulsion, Grass said.

"I know times have changed, and you can't do (just) anything in schools anymore," Grass said. ............(more)

6. Why do people still think oregano "resembles marijuana"?
It never has, and hopefully never will.

7. Oh come on. Everyone knows oregano is a gateway herb.
Next it's a little tarragon, and before you know it they're into full stalks of rosemary.

But I suppose snorting marjorum will do in a pinch.

15. I have very little tolerance for officious school policies, but...
I have to wonder why the kid felt it necessary to carry Oregano, of all things, in a plastic bag to hand off to another student. Sound rather like he was trying to provoke a reaction.

23. If you read the article, you'll see that the child never "felt it necessary "

He didn't bring the stuff to school. The bag was handed to the boy in question by another student who wanted it returned to its owner. The subject of the staory then handed it off to another student who could complete that request. Total "possession" time = less than a minute.

20. good, it's time scumbag opportunists paid a price
admittedly i date back to the days of the dinosaurs but in my book the man (or boy) who sells a worthless spice and calls it a healing medicine needs to suffer serious serious SERIOUS pain

i don't use marijuana and i honestly think i don't have a personal dog in this hunt but folks who LIE about what they're selling, we have a name for them, they're republicans

they are scum and they need to suffer consequences
