After pounding rebel hub, Gaddafi calls for truce as UN action looms
CAIRO: Libya's army said it would halt operations from Sunday to allow rebels to lay down their arms, softening repeated threats by Muammar Gaddafi to crush them, as world powers edged towards adopting tough measures to shut down the strongman's military machine.

Libyan troops pushed forward towards the insurgent stronghold of Benghazi on Thursday and launched air raids on its outskirts as Washington raised the possibility of air strikes to stop the forces. The international debate on what action to take may have dragged on too long to help the anti-Gaddafi uprising, now struggling to hold its ground one month after it started.

3. Two minutes ago he was threatening to crush the revolutionaries
and any nation who helped them. He said any intervention would be disastrous for the international community in the long term and the short term. I took that to mean he was threatening terrorist attacks. He's a psychopath and he needs to be DESTROYED. Not just removed from power but killed...and I don't say that about too many people.

4. He's playing a game. Only a fool will believe him now.
He wants time to kill the rebels off. He knows the UN is a toothless institution.
If he can stall any EU action, he can mop up the rebellion.

5. You think he is going to survive all of this?
That is pretty hard to fathom.

7. Its not what I think, its what HE thinks.
and he thinks he will win.
frankly I do to. He doesn't need air support to kill the rebels.

all that's been agreed to is a no fly zone. No one is bombing his palaces.
The no fly zone alone will do nothing. And there lots of anti-aircraft missiles lying around.
