1. This took a while to format, copy, edit and upload so that everyone knows what they're talking about
Hence this :kick:

Thanks a lot to whoever gave the rec. :hi:

5. Thanks, appreciate the effort.
Some group of people somewhere are going to spend entire careers tracking down all of his various bank accounts and skimming agreements.

6. You're most welcome. They were saying on AJE that Mugabe and al-Bashir will be poring over it...
Edited on Fri Mar-18-11 12:28 AM by Turborama
...as this is a 1st for the UN.

They made some valid points and I'm going to keep an eye out to see if something similar gets posted to the Libya section of their site: http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/spotlight/libya/

Thanks for the thanks, glad you found it interesting/useful. :hi:

10. I thought I heard in the coverage
of the resolution that sanctions would be imposed on any state supplying mercenaries, but I didn't see it in the draft. I'll have to look closer a little later.

Libya is a signatory to the UN Mercenary convention, so using them now would be a clear violation. I would assume so anyway. Yet, I don't recall anyone making it a point in the discussions beforehand. I suppose too many nations are invested in it to make it an issue.

I guess I never thought of it that way, but for all the (mostly tolerated) crap that he's pulled for 40 years, the one thing that gets him in the cross-hairs is shelling his own city and firing on unarmed civilians with AA rounds. At least we know there are standards, even for the UN.

11. Thank you Turborama ~
I especially like that they will be preventing mercenaries from entering the country.

And the revolutionaries asked for the NFZ.

What I don't see, although I did read it very quickly, is anything about foreign troops being allowed on the ground. The revos expressively asked that this not be permitted.

I hope Qadaffi doesn't go completely insane now and start a war that will go on for years. If he is smart, he will agree to a cease-fire and as the resolution suggests, start talking about best to end this peacefully.

But I am afraid that he and his sons are prepared to die. And with that mindset, if it's true, this may take a while.

Going to read it again to see if I did miss anything ....

16. Hi Sabrina
Your most welcome.

You were right about them saying foreign troops not being allowed on the ground.

For your convenience it's at the top of this page under "Protection of civilians" #4:

They have agreed to a "ceasefire", but as Al Jazeera English are reporting now, it seems like it's just a ploy and they haven't stopped fighting.

21. Thank you, I see it now ~
Maybe I'm a bit paranoid, as people in those countries are, I just hope the words 'occupying force' were not deliberate and that such forces could be on the ground under the pretext of 'peace-keeping' forces.

Hopefully I am wrong, but as so many have said, the spectre of Iraq and Afghanistan and our continued slaughter of civilians in Pakistan, our collusion with the Yemeni Government to drop bombs there and so much more, looms very large in the minds of millions of people.

A country that otoh, pretends to care about civilian lives, while at the same time is actually murdering them on a daily basis elsewhere, cannot be trusted at all, especially where there is oil.

Just being cautious, hopefully not paranoid. :-)

22. Well, I am usually a sceptic when it comes to things like this but they do specify...
Edited on Fri Mar-18-11 11:46 PM by Turborama
...no "foreign occupation force of any form on any part of Libyan territory".

"Of any form" is a deliberate choice of words and doesn't leave any room for ambiguous interpretations in the future, IMHO.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one and think Britain, France, Lebanon, Qatar, America et al are coming from the right place, but let's see. :hi:

23. Wish I felt the same way, Turborama, and I hope you are right.
But Cameron, the British PM said this week that it may be necessary to 'put troops on the ground as a peace-keeping force. The wording in the resolution doesn't say anything about peace-keeping forces'. They are very clever, these Colonialists, they've been doing this kind of thing for centuries.

I'll pray that I am wrong and you are right ... :-)

7. Thanks for the K&R, Sid.
One thing that we need to make sure of from the outset is that we all know what we're actually talking about.

3. I like the asset freeze. I don't like the cease fire. The revolutionaries have a right to fight him.

8. There's a few things I don't like in it
But at least, for now, it seems to have stopped Gaddafi from turning Benghazi into another Srebrenica type massacre.

Thanks for the thanks.

I hope they don't swallow this bullshit "ceasefire" playing for time ploy that's been announced while he's still bombing Misrata.

15. How will a no-fly zone work?
AJE provides some answers in a brief report showing some of the military bases that would likely be involved:

19. Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
Have you heard about what's happened in Yemen today, BTW?

I watched http://english.aljazeera.net/programmes/peopleandpower/2011/03/201131683916701492.html">this episode of People & Power just before it happened and it simply breaks my heart thinking these wonderful people have been mown down.
