3. Replacement for what? Just news?
I just use the various mobile sites. I never saw much of a need for the native apps.

6. If you're into RSS, the basic google reader is a decent app.
I prefer Pulse, though, it's got a nice graphical interface, but it's a bit large. I have the Droid 2 with a ridiculous amount of internal memory, but I remember the Droid is a bit lacking when it comes to that (despite it being an otherwise great phone). I can't remember if Pulse can be saved to the SD card without rooting.

5. Maybe start backwards by looking at what news type apps they have
Edited on Thu Mar-17-11 11:05 PM by hlthe2b
for your droid and then go visit the sites to see how they compare. BBC has a decent app and I also got Al Jazeera English (both for iphone/ipod-- don't know if they have droid). I also got the NPR app. Salon.com isn't a bad site-- I think they have or are working on apps.

HuffPo had a lot of irritating aspects--well before Breitbart and the sale to AOL. That said, it was a very nice convenient site to get a gist of the news across many areas. Talking point memo is coming along, but isn't as easy to traverse as HuffPo. There are probably some other really good progressive news compilers that can't afford to make an "app."

9. The built-in news & weather app is pretty good
Edited on Thu Mar-17-11 11:39 PM by bananas
You can put a widget on the screen that displays the headlines,
and you can add search items.

And because it's built-in, it doesn't take any extra memory.

10. I like Huffpo
Yeah, I'm not happy to see them give this asshole a sounding board, but I suspect that he'll get a pretty hostile reception there. I just like the format...it's a visual read where you can scan by pictures...if I see an interesting pic, chances are I read the lede, then click through to the story. I also like the way they structure the various parts of the site...sort of like how a newspaper would do it. It's usually topical, so you get the key stories of the moment. Some good commentary, too. Frankly, I don't know why there aren't other people copying HP's approach. I do find some of the ledes poorly written, sensationalistic, and sometimes downright misleading. They could use stronger editng in this area. Some of the subsections are a joke....under sports, you're hard pressed to find a real sports story there - more like a carryover from their Entertainment page. It's really a general reader, although the political stories tend towards our way of thinking.

Here's a site you might want to look at:

http://www.hoffmania.com/blog/bloggregator.html This is more politically oriented and I have links to most of the sites that he aggregates....but it might interest you. It's well designed, but no pics.
