don't let them fool you... Spent Fuel is NUCLEAR WASTE !!! |
|
The media has gotten everyone, even DU, to use the term "spent fuel". What they are talking about is the rods that have been used up already and are sitting in water cooling off so that they can be taken somewhere - presumably your backyard, not theirs - for "disposal". This is NUCLEAR WASTE.
They put this NUCLEAR WASTE in a not so secure area for 8-10 YEARS for it to just cool down enough to take it somewhere else. This is what the big problem over in Fukushima is right now. The NUCLEAR WASTE that is left over for tens or hundreds of thousands of years after it has been used for the purpose of creating power.
GE and its servants are spinning this so that we don't start talking about the thing that no one has a good answer for, NUCLEAR WASTE. Spent fuel sounds so innocuous compared to NUCLEAR WASTE but that is exactly what it is, NUCLEAR WASTE. And they didn't even bother to design the plants to have sufficient protection for this NUCLEAR WASTE that they need to hold for 8-10 YEARS before they are able to even move it somewhere.
And just think about all the water that is used to cool this NUCLEAR WASTE for 8-10 YEARS. It has to be recirculated constantly so that cool water is flowing in because otherwise, as we have seen, it will boil off. The NUCLEAR WASTE is that hot.
So please, just as we don't call the Estate Tax the Death Tax, let's not call NUCLEAR WASTE spent fuel anymore.
"spent fuel" is NUCLEAR WASTE!!!

1. Also Spent Waste does not make Mushroom Clouds or Plumes |

roaming about the world spreading isotopes.
The greatest danger for spent waste is for those closest to the site.
When this situation is finally over, Japan will probably be changed forever. Not so the US and other countries.

7. What we are watching on the news is nuclear waste. It has made plumes and is spreading already. |
|
If they can't get water in there it may explode. Whether it is mushroom shaped or not, it is still a catastrophe. It is not okay for anyone to have to deal with this situation. Look at a map of where all the nuke plants are in this country. Are you okay with how close they are to cities? If something happens at Indian Head how are they going to evacuate everyone out of NYC?
Also, nuclear waste is around for tens/hundreds thousands of years. How long can we continue to produce this toxic waste and not have it be so detrimental as to change life as we know it? Plus, the methods of containment erode/get damaged. We've all heard about leaking.
As far as policy, China has halted construction of new plants and Germany is shutting down old ones. That's a good step. Unfortunately here, our president still thinks it is a viable option.
Not worth the risk. Especially when it's our tax payer dollars insuring the American plants.

The Nuclear business is about profit...safety appears to take a second seat and trash a third.
