2. Oh but our plants are Amerian built plants, on firm soil
In America.

And besides, unlike people in Canada, where there are emergency measures to protect citizens, Americans are invulnerable to anything related to nuke contamination.

We didn't even get told about potassium iodide by our media here.

I can never figure out why so many here on DU hate Amerika!

3. It's that "Dirty Bomb" of spent fuel on the 4th floor
that interests me, and perhaps terrorists. The outer walls are not robust to say the least. Later versions were reinforced.

4. And there is a dirty little secret
Nuke contractors in America love to cut corners and they love to use less concrete and other materials than specs call for.

If Three Mile Island had not been built honestly, many living on the East Coast in 1986 would not be alive today.

So that "fudging" is a big problem.

6. Three Mile Island really is a smoking gun.

Chernobyl and Fukushima were ancient defective designs that should have be decommissioned. That the Soviets built a reactor in the 1980's that had no vessel containment whatsoever boggles the mind.

But decommissioning is the heart of the problem. In general, nuclear reactors are only profitable if they complete, or substantially complete, their operational life.

10. I wrote about the political events in Fukushima that resulted in
The nuke plants there continuing to operate (Well, at least until the Tsunami knocked them out.)

7. None of those are in areas known for huge earthquakes.
So I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to take away from this.

8. A spent fuel pond on the 4th floor
of a paper thin concrete outer building. Later models were reinforced.

9. But Secretary Chu said we should have "full confidence that the US has rigorous
safety regulations in place to ensure that our nuclear power is generated safely and responsibly."

My confidence level in the US and its "rigorous" safety regulations is nowhere near "full."
