UCLA will not punish student for anti-Asian rant

LOS ANGELES—The University of California, Los Angeles, says it will not discipline a student who posted a web video tirade against Asian colleagues because her conduct was an exercise of free speech, not hate speech.

UCLA's vice chancellor for student affairs, Janina Montero, said in a statement on Friday that Alexandra Wallace's three-minute video did not violate the student code of conduct.

Montero says the video was misguided and disrespectful, but it did not seek to harm or threaten a specific person or group.

Wallace apologized for the video earlier this week in the campus newspaper.

In the video, Wallace complained about Asian students talking on their phones too loudly in the library. Although she took down the rant shortly after posting it Sunday, it had already gone viral on the Internet.

I agree with your posting, I am just adding to it... I think something should be done about hate speech. I wish someone would find a solution, but I understand we have Free Speech in this country and anyone can say anything, mostly without consequence.

I don't know what the solution is, other then a boundary somewhere.
