1. The NRC has some pretty easy to understand educational PDFs on their website.

The chapter on Boiling Water Reactor Systems can be found here:

   http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/basic-ref/teachers/03.pdf   (3.30 MB)

The first graphic in that chapter is practically identical to the one you just posted.
____________

For those interested, pokerfan provided links to that whole NRC series the other day in the following post:

2. The reactor is WAY more complicated than that. But that's a good basic one for a BWR.
No pressurizer, no condensate polishing system, no discharge system, no sampling system, no aux steam, no charging, no emergency fill, etc etc etc...

4. Yes it is missing a few things
I know...

But it has the basics people need to understand this.

6. Hubby was an ANAV
:hi: he always assumed that boat was going to kill him!

They asked if he wanted to be nuke, when he first joined. It sounded too good to be good...

8. M-div in the house, once I hit the fleet the worst years of my life began!
Could care less about the reactor though. Had to operate next to a 1R/hr during a maintenance evolution once, didn't notice it, years later nothing happened. Just the nature of the beast. Spent way too long in the yards, too much BS there. Had guys talking about sabotaging the boat, some dude broke his hand punching a wall. I was thinking about volunteering to go to Iraq to get away from it all.

10. The fleet has changed
one reason he retired.

It used to be less political.

3. Not good for a shutdown reactor.
This is a good basic diagram for a BWR at normal power levels while generating steam(1% - 100%). It does not have enough detail to describe plant operations while the reactor is shutdown and in an emergency condition. Also the diagram does not show the spent fuel storage facility. In other words, it won't help you understand anything that has happened since the earthquake.

12. I think it's somewhat simplified.
There would probably be another loop between the RPV and the turbines. After all, you don't want to have them irradiated because that would make repairs of turbines a very problematic.

13. It is, but think of the audience
It is missing a few things that for the most basic of theory just get in the way.
