Technology safety aside, the real issue at the heart of not building new nuclear facilities
and eradicating nuclear weapons from the world is that the industry cannot be trusted to follow rules and legislators cannot be trusted to construct and enforce regulations when being plied with large donations. Period.

This morning on the local news we learned that Midamerican Energy is requesting permission to build a second nuclear facility in Iowa and last week Branstad was making noises about the safety of nuclear power and that its on the table as far as he is concerned.

I live within a 25 mi radius of the Duane Arnold facility. The only objection the mayor of Palo made to the possible addition of a second facility in the area was that DA is outside of the corporate district there and does not pay property taxes to the community. No concern whatsoever for adding more risk for the citizens.
