Is There a Correlation Between Collective Bargaining of Public Sector Unions and State Deficits?
Edited on Sat Mar-19-11 11:50 AM by leftupnorth
In short, no. Just compare the two maps below:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RwdH5DTKRas/TG_IWqmpXEI/AAAAAAAADR8/zt3kRWq2f8k/s1600/map+of+state+budget+deficits.jpg

Of the five states that prohibit collective bargaining by public employees, four of them have budget deficits over 10%.

Of the 10 states with less than 5% budget deficits, only one completely prohibits CB, and the other nine either require or permitCB by public sector unions.

Obviously the CB map has changed a little bit, but the basic premise is, there is absolutely no correlation between Public Sector Union CB and state budget deficits, period.

4. Gee, whatta shock!
Not!

Thanks for presenting the data.
Of course, it would be interesting to provide a similar correlation between states with deficits and states that have provided huge tax cuts for the rich.

How recent is this information? Maybe I am the one who is behind on this one.

This is from last May

But as the state's budget shortfall widens—to as much as $18 billion, or about 20% of the next two-year budget, according to the state legislature's latest analysis released earlier this month—critics are complaining that Mr. Perry's policies have left the state with little room to reduce spending.

7. The budget deficit map is from 2009.
I could not find any newer map than that, sorry.

Thank you for your link, that further supports our premise that Public union CB and budget deficits are not correlative.
