Virginians concerned about uranium mining
Edited on Sat Mar-19-11 03:05 PM by RegieRocker
Case Summary

In 2007, a Virginia company went public with its plans to develop a uranium mining operation in Pittsylvania County, in southern Virginia. The area is believed to contain the largest untapped deposit of uranium in the U.S., valued at today’s prices around $10 billion.

A similar proposal in the 1970s, when the deposit was discovered, resulted in a statewide moratorium on uranium mining (click here for more background). SELC is at the forefront of a citizen effort to keep the ban in place for as long as it takes for the public and elected officials to fully evaluate the issue, including impacts on the environment and public health.

2. It is wise to proceed with caution; on the other hand, exaggerated fear
has often been an impediment to the advancement of scientific research. Therefore, it would be irresponsible to abandon the pursuit of knowledge in this field.

3. There is a grave difference between imaginary and
real health concerns. Either it is a health concern or it isn't. Military mindedness with the notion that acceptable losses are OK needs to fade away forever.

4. This mining most definitely
wouldn't be for pursuit of knowledge. 10 billion...? greed. Corners cut, land and people poisoned.

5. I sit in a mine and breath Radon gas every year

I have gone to the Free Enterprise Radon Health Mine in Boulder and stayed for 4-6 hrs a day, 10 days at a time, for 1-2 times a year, for the past 6 years.

I should have been on dialysis 3 years ago and I'm still avoiding it with Glomerulosclerosis. My husband goes for preventive purposes and it has helped him with bronchitis. The mine has been a blessing to me and I have met people from all over the world there, even from Tokyo.

I highly recommend the radon therapy if you can afford to go.

6. Buy a home laden with Radon. It would be cheaper for you.
