Center City Philly Borders Books is closing...

The most salient line from the article:

While "we all lament the passing of Borders," Gartner said, nothing lasts forever.

"These businesses are like Hollywood sets," he said. "They go up and down."

1. 200 Borders Stores Are Closing
This is but one of a many faceted story.

2. I've been to that one. I bought a walking tour guide and my wife bought a book on Philly's ghosts.
Too bad it's closing. We have toyed with the idea of moving to Philadelphia.

Would have happened by now if not for Bush's economy.

5. you probably can't blame Bush for this one
you can blame the rise of on-line sellers and e-books

but it's almost ironic since Borders put so many smaller bookstores out of business

6. Screw Borders and their LONG anti-union history
Philly is a great city. I've lived here for years. But Border's anti-union campaign STARTED in Philly - at THAT store - in '96. It was their union-busting handbook that was used in efforts to bust the grad school union at Yale. Pardon my French, but fuck Borders. There are still a few terrific independently owned bookstores in Philly.

8. I was going to ask about other book stores in Center City.
Pretty sure we visited one on South Street.

Next time we're up there, we'll have to check them out.

13. You could try
Joseph Fox, on Sansom, right in CC

But we've got shops that specialize in queer interests, mysteries, theosophy, rare books...I'm pretty sure the one on South St. moved around the corner a couple of years ago. I know it used to be right there, but I think it's on 4th now, heading south. And there's another a block or two south of South St. but right in that same shopping area around 6th or 8th...

There was a lovely, overstuffed shop right across the street from Eastern State Penitentiary. I don't remember it's name or I'd look it up to see if it's still there. I haven't been since my friend who lived around the corner moved to Jersey a few years back

14. I know, I know
It just makes me so angry that so many people (certainly on DU but elsewhere as well) love Borders but ignore, or don't know, their anti-union stance.

11. I think this is the leading edge of a trend
eBooks is about to do to the book biz what digitizing did to the music and news business.

I see it as a good thing for authors. They can market direct and keep more of the fruit of their intellectual property.

17. Borders has no business being in Center City, anyway.
Philly is about independent small business and Borders thwarts that effort.
