COSTA MESA – Grief and anger swept through Costa Mesa City Hall on Thursday after a city worker jumped to his death shortly after being called in to get a layoff notice.

Three workers had to restrain a city employee who tried to charge at Councilmen Jim Righeimer and Stephen Mensinger with his arm cocked.

Another city employee muttered, "You're not welcome here," referring to the councilmen.

Nick Berardino, general manager of the Orange County Employees Association, was seen cursing at city CEO Tom Hatch in the lobby of City Hall.

"You cannot give out notices wholesale like that in this economy," Berardino said. "That's what's going to happen."

"You can't do this so fast and think that there's not going to be repercussions," she said.

2. I assume you're
being sarcastic ... else, big question for you: Have you ever lost a loved one to suicide? I have, three loved ones, in fact. BTW, get ready for many more to come.

it's a big story here. Mayor under fire for partying after suicide. Don't know if he knew about the suicide though.

Of a $93 million budget, Costa Mesa is spending more than $15 million on pensions this year, and that number is projected to be above $25 million inside of five years.

Local officials are paying more attention to the issue. Two weeks ago, council members from Huntington Beach, Orange, Fullerton, Westminster, Fountain Valley and Lake Forest, among other cities, attended a pension-reform seminar put together by Orange County Republican Party Chairman Scott Baugh.

But no other local city has gone as far as Costa Mesa. The City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to lay off workers in 18 offices, from firefighting to maintenance, information technology and payroll.
