Poll question: Would you like to see US troops brought home from Afghanistan immediately? |
|
This question is related to the other poll question I posed about Charles Rangels letter proposing the reintroduction of a military draft.

1. Bring them home NOW (although I realize it's not an easy task |
|
logistically) and NO to the draft because I think it targets the middle/lower class.
I WOULD be in favor of mandatory service as they have in Israel - I think that's fair. A draft isn't.

7. If they showed that on MSM they all would be coming home |
|
very soon because people would get upset about it. But the war is hardly covered at all so people forget about it. But we are spending $2 Billion per week and we've been there for almost 10 years to accomplish what?

6. Bring them home now, reinstate the draft.... |
|
...the idea that a draft unfairly singles out lower income Americans is laughable. That's what we have now - a poverty draft.
If we had a lottery that would pick sons and daughters of middle and upper class citizens, we wouldn't go rushing into wars at the drop of a hat.
Nixon ended the draft (1974?) because he knew it was a "problem" causing average Joes and Janes to become anti-war.

And I oppose a draft.
My husband has now aged out of the draft, but you can bet that I would lay down my life before I let him go to war and possibly get killed on behalf of corporations. And if the draft included women, and I got drafted - if I had no other choice I'd seriously kill myself before joining the military.
I worked in retail and in fast food for a while. That much loss of autonomy and control over my own life nearly drove me to suicide. I can only imagine what being in the military would do to me.

The fast paced rat race world of fast food was too much for you? What do you do on a daily basis? I'm truly curious....

11. Oh, leave her alone. Some jobs really do suck |
|
and make people cry themselves to sleep every night. I'm glad to hear you've never had a miserable job.
I myself have had a few dreadful jobs, but I am now happy to have a job that I kind of like, even though the pay is crap.

No, seriously, though. I agree with you, that it does takes a mature person to deal with realistic expectations of work. But really, if you have never had a shit-sucking job, then, congratulations. You have beaten the odds.
It also takes maturity to realize when a job is just not for you. Some jobs are more stressful than others, sometimes because we ourselves make it that way, but also because of asshole co-workers, supervisors, stupid ridiculous policies, etc.
Edit to add: thank you for your service to our country. :hi: Of course it depends on what you went through during your time of duty, but....I cannot even imagine. I'm really trying to be supportive, and I apologize if it does not come across that way.

If you are THAT easily stressed, it would probably show up during the physical.

15. Other: Want out Afghanistan immediately and could support or oppose the draft depending circumstance |
|
In conjunction with a serious war tax, a draft could be a part of a double whammy that could really make one and all think real seriously if war is necessary.
Without tough hits to potential profits and going into the greedy's pockets would there be enough balance to effectively utilize a draft to make the broader public ponder the need for war.
I'll never support one without the tax, the wealthy will spend blood in search of profits.

income level or political connection...everyone who is able to contribute SOME SERVICE to the USA should do so, similar to Israel.
