128. Because the Libyans asked for it and Benghazi was getting razed.
In fact, Gaddafi called a "cease fire" while continuing to march his troops on Benghazi. He knew if he killed the Transitional National Council the revolution would die. He got a council member (Mo) but he failed in that regard.

My question was simple, but as with so many questions you're asked, you side-stepped it JUST like any good Sunday talking head would.

Why does that continue to make me suspect of your writings???

138. Wrong. The Security Council passed a resolution supported by UK, France and US...
with five abstentions, including Russia, China and Germany.

The latest coalition chose a no-flight zone, and the SC approved it. No vote was held by the General Assembly.

This is an action by a few of the NATO countries with support from some countries and objections from others. It is not a United Nations action or decision. To say this is pure ideological cover. You can support what you do, but avoiding bullshit might make you more credible. Thanks.

139. Per CNN this morning, it was also backed by the 22-member Arab League
From which Qaddafi was recently ejected.

The hurdle that international leaders had to clear was deliberately set high; a clear request from the Libyan opposition backed by the Arab League and a firm statement of intent by some Arab and Muslim countries to participate in prospective military action.

All this has been achieved and fair credit should be given to Prime Minister Cameron and President Sarkozy for their leadership of an understandably sceptical Europe and United States, fraught with nervousness carried over from Iraq and Afghanistan.

But, as David Cameron argued in his statement to the House of Commons on Friday, the actions to be authorised were based squarely on demonstrable need, regional support and a clear legal basis – no spin needed this time.

145. Maybe you shouldn't rely solely on the CNN War Propaganda Network for your information.
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 04:06 PM by JackRiddler
The "22-member" Arab League, within which most of the governments are currently being rendered illegitimate by their suppression of popular uprisings, today issued a statement backing off from their advocacy, saying they had something other than a military attack in mind by endorsing a no-flight zone.

Here's the Washington Note:

http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/2011/03/arab_league_we/

QUOTE:

Despite amazing diplomatic efforts to first secure Arab League support for a No-Fly Zone, always a false hook because a no-fly zone would not have affected the military equation significantly, and then getting a UN resolution through, the head of the Arab League is now saying the organization never signed off on what the US, French and allies are now doing -- meaning, bombing military sites inside Libya.

Note all the verbiage that was inserted prior to telling us the actual story -- which is the Washington Note's attempt to put a spin on it that saves face for the bomber nations.

The LA Times:

LIBYA: Arab League head criticizes airstrikes as Western forces impose no-fly zone

March 20, 2011

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2011/03/libya-airstrikes-military-tripoli-kadafi.html

This is also spin. Western forces are not imposing a no-fly zone. They are conducting airstrikes, which the Arab League now claims not to have endorsed.

You can call it kabuki, if you like. It's clear enough that the Arab League nations don't want to be seen supporting this. Do you wonder why? Because it's clear enough that their peoples generally don't support another bombing of another Arab nation by yet another "liberation" war led by UK-US.

Deal with it.

The USA has been at war somewhere, either openly or covertly, in every decade of my life. War is what we do. I fervently share your wish but have absolutely zero hope. Our system is rigged but certainly not rigged to "elect" a pacifist President. Ike was SO RIGHT about the Military/Industrial Complex.

57. Good point
JFK was no Genghis Khan, but he authorized his fair share of killing. I'm not saying it was right or wrong, but it's odd that some people choose to ignore that. Carter also authorized a commando operation against Iran, which unfortunately failed to even get off of the ground. Carter was also blamed by the Soviets for scuttling detente due to his concern over human rights issues within the USSR. Neither were men of war, but they were still the CICs of a great power.

Believe anything, anybody who supports their view and tries to make you feel bad about it.

Keep doing what you are doing and exposing this sham.

You'd think after all the wars and all the history, people would learn, but they do not - it is quite amazing.

Get rid of a dictator, and new one will take his place no matter how much blood was shed. These are not democratic countries. I invite these warmongers to move to Iraq to see the great democracy there.

But you just sit back at your computer and feel morally superior because you put your 19th century kooky isolationist principles before the lives of those people.

126. We've been lied about wars before, lost thousands of people
And we're supposed to go in guns blazing, spending billions and trillions across the world while our own budget for domestic programs is being decimated by the rightwing without any cuts for military, oil subsidies, or taxing the top 2% anymore - and they get more out of the country than most, they need to pay their fair share.

The timing is just unbelievable - too good to be true. Sorry I don't blindly trust everything I read.

Where's the WMD in Iraq? A million people died there over the duration of the war - where's the democracy?

146. Oh, you're one of the tinfoil-hatters who don't believe *anything*?
Then, we can't reason. After all, if you don't believe countless tv stations all over the world, including Middle Eastern, reporting on 3,000 dead Libyans; if you don't believe the rebels who were begging and pleading for the West to intervene... then where's the reasoning? You have a gut feeling because you had a shitty president before... and the people of Libya have to pay with their lives for your gut feeling.

At least you could've taken a clue from history. Read up on Qaddafi. He's not the swell anti-imperialist crusader you think he is.

69. Judging by the way you write
You've never served in the military, never worn a uniform, never been in a war.

You're what is known as a "chickenhawk" in the states - rightwingers are more likely chickenhawks because they advocate war when they would never serve in a billion years.

Once you've been a war and were shot at or bombed, maybe you then could encourage another country's young to fight in a war - to take down ANOTHER dictator!

And probably would as long as the US didn't take a hard line against it, which seems to be what some here are advocating. My guess is that it's because the US has world's largest economy and most advanced military and also exercises a global leadership role. Other countries expect the US to be part of international actions like this.

So happy you can support us spending trillions on unwinnable wars at the sacrifice of our people - so much distance between the rich and poor that we will end up like th countries we fight in.

There will always be a new perceived threat to our security. There will always be another despot to unseat. We will always find a new justification for a new war, because to do otherwise is simply unAmerican. If it will bleed us of our riches and rob us of our youth, those are the sacrifices we must make. It is the will of the world.
