Rupert Murdoch's right wing news empire just took a HUGE blow in the courts!! BIG NEWS COMING
Rupert Murdoch, aside from owning FOX News and the Wall Street Journal has also managed to scoop up a large portion of Britain's newspapers. Well, it ends up Murdoch's papers have been hacking the phones of the liberal politicians and using the info gleaned to chase them out of office, ruin their character, etc. Besides politicians they have been hacking phones of both the rich and the famous...including the Princes of England.

Rupert Murdoch has been able to keep things quiet with a few huge payoffs and by having many of the investigating policeman paid off by the newspapers by hiring them as writers, etc. Well, the whole mess is unraveling...details that the hacking by just ONE investigator might have tallied up to over 4000 people, several of Murdoch's top employees have been implicated up to the right hand man of the Conservative Prime Minister. But throughout this entire debacle one thing has kept Murdoch's papers safe...the police have refused to share the information that they discovered in this one investigator's house...

Murdoch has already been sued by 5 or 6 peeps and it cost him close to a million dollars per lawsuit, settled out of court, with an agreement of silence so nobody has got to see the evidence. If all 4000 people sue...times a million bucks a piece.... even murdoch will not be able to hold onto his entire company. Since there has been several big checks written for hush money even Murdoch's son might be sued like crazy since he OK'd the payoffs (most likely)

so, ladies and gentlemen of DU, I present you this fabulous article that just may well be the beginning of the end for a large chunk of Rupert Murdoch's right wing sway over the media. Once all this info is out we might start seeing that Murdoch's AMerican news companies have been hacking phones and emails as well.

From the Guardian UK: Met must hand over News of the World phone-hacking evidence
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/mar/18/met-news-world-hacking-evidence

The SH** is about to hit the fan. :0)

All rec does is put an OP on the greatest page for a short period of time. Big deal.

I'll never understand this wild obsession with rec/unrec and will be so damn happy when it's gone.

104. what do I need to pay attention to rec/unrec???
It doesn't really do anything. As I said, all it does is put an OP on the greatest page for a short time. What the fuck does that matter so much for??? I never gave shit one about rec/unrec and don't need it at all in order to "pay attention" and neither does anyone else. Frankly, using the greatest page as a filter for what it is you're willing to pay attention to makes you paying a hell of a lot less attention than those of us that don't.

It's thanks to rec/unrec that has made GD in particular crammed with a barrage of OP's that are nothing but half thoughts or no thoughts that make the good well written and sourced OP's that are deserving of attention sink like a rock and all for the warm fuzzies it apparently gives people to get an OP of theirs on the greatest page... as if that actually matters.

Rec/unrec turned out to be a plague on DU, and I can't bloody wait till it's gone so I can stop wasting so much time seeking out those good threads that are actually worth reading.

112. Well, I would have missed this if it had not been at the top
of the greatest list. So long as what gets rec'd is worth reading, it's a good way to draw attention to important posts, like this one. I do agree that a lot gets rec'd that is not especially important while far more important OPs don't.

113. You may not care for the Rec/Unrec function....
You may not care for the Rec/Unrec function, and that’s fine, but there are many who do find it useful… both for its ability to bring immediate attention to stories that people feel are important and as a way to show solidarity with others on the board.
While you’re certainly entitled to your opinion as to what is and is not quality “good well written and sourced OP's”, I find it curious that you have chosen to abstain from using the one provided tool that permits you to bring said stories to the forefront for others to read.
Complaining that others aren’t reading the quality postings and then stating that you refuse to use rec/unrec seems akin to complaining about how the good politicians aren’t getting voted for and then refusing to vote for them yourself.

115. I don't use the greatest page at all... i use the forum page
it shows the number of hits, the number of comments and the number of recs. It is a great tool to see how many people are commenting (discussion is a good thing and the reason we are here) and the rec shows the number of people making a suggestion to read the article. How can that be bad?

Just skip the greatest page if it makes you so upset.

106. you use the greatest page as a filter then?
That's yet another problem the rec/unrec feature created. Before the rec/unrec plague OP's were generally good threads worth reading and simple to find because the better ones would be somewhere on the first page of each forum. Now the forums - GD in particular - is full of threads of OP's that are nothing but worthless crap since because of rec/unrec practically everyone had to make there every thought, partial thought and no thought into an OP just for the warm fuzzies of recs.

NOT using the greatest page as a filter to what I pay attention to here makes me seeing a hell of a lot more threads deserving of attention than those who like to filter out what they want to read by a popularity consensus.

I you're using the greatest page as a filter to what to pay attention to then it's you that's missing out on increased knowledge.

59. So that whole "going viral" thing is pointless, right?
Knowledge is not power. The media is not the message. Ignorance IS bliss.

The rec function moves things out of obscurity and into the much-more-public eye. Then it has more of a chance to get into the "Hey, did you see this?" e-mail, FB, trending, DU-scouting eddies that then feed into the mainstream. Murdoch knows this; that's why it's in his interest to push the boundaries. And in ours to stop him.

Rec, rec, reccity rec rec.

108. that's a pant load
All it does is move a thread onto the greatest page for a short time. If people are using the greatest page as a filter to determine what they see that's THEIR problem. My NOT using the greatest page filter gives me the opportunity to see a hell of a lot more worthwhile threads. There is no "moving threads out of obscurity" unless you do that to yourself. I don't and won't. It's the people that use the greatest page as a filter to what they see that are actively making themselves blissfully ignorant. And it's thanks to the rec feature that has made people have the need to make every single thought, partial thought and no thought into an OP for the warm fuzzies of getting recs which just clogs up the forums with dupes and crap thereby further obscuring worthwhile threads.

A pox on rec/unrec. I'll be so thrilled when it's gone.

Glenn Beck practically brags about illegal phone taps on the air. Gee, I wonder why they couldn't show the other comments. Could it be how they were attained?

10. But don't get your hopes too high yet. They have 21 days to appeal.
And plenty of money can be spread around in those three weeks to move this issue to the back burner where Murdoch can accidentally push it off to fall behind the stove.

I hope someone there has the bazookas to hold out for justice instead of sucking in a barrel of cash.
I have my doubts though.

Yeah, I think the dam is about to burst. The implication is, since such large sums of money were paid to hush things up, that this is going to reach quite high in the murdoch chain. All the way to Murdoch? Probably not...but if 3 or 4000 people sue it will shake things all the way up to the top and he might have to start liquidating his holdings to pay off the lawsuits.

I've been following this for a while and I personally think that the British people are going to be so disgusted by what has been going on that they will vote out the politicians who are close to murdoch's empire. Not all of them, of course, but it will make a dent.

And Murdoch might have to sell off some papers to pay off some lawsuits--also not a bad thing. What the British press should be looking into is how many other investigators on the books were doing the same thing. That could add thousands of more lawsuits.

The only reason other than complete spinelessness was that they were being blackmailed.

69. I agree.
I've said for nearly 10 years here at DU that "spinelessness" just isn't strong enough of a reason for the behavior of our D.C. Dems.

Bribery, blackmail, a "fifth column" within the party. Something much stronger than spinelessness is in operation in the background.

45. I'm VERY cautiously optimistic.....
They still have time to appeal and I have little doubt they will. What makes me more cautious is the fact that potentially complicit cops now have control of the evidence. So what key aspects of that evidence will be destroyed by the time it's handed over? Since it's not known exactly what they possess, evidence destruction would be pretty easy.

At the same pace as here in the US, then this headline and article will be ancient history when the final outcome are known.

"Vos rejected that argument, giving the Met 28 days to comply with his order and 21 days to appeal."

So does any DU'er think Rupert's bribes have concluded? I mean a few million here and a few million there can drag out this mess for years just in the lower courts and then there are appeals, stays, briefs and any number of backroom deals. Good call by the judge but...

It can be very quick or it can be very slow. Completely depends on the case, what level it is at and how high profile it is.

Unless Murdoch has bought out the Metropolital Police, then generally the Met will comply, unless there's something that will either bring the police force down if it got out or is considered a matter of grave national security.

Though it implies he's been doing exactly the same thing here, I mean, why would he restrain himself? We really need the same sort of evidence to bring him down.

We need a whistleblower or two. Wikileaks, want to step up?

It's entertaining, finally, that the morality of these Randites is being exposed cesspool that it is. Also, what their actual regard for free speech really is.

I'm hoping for something like the end I always wanted to see in Atlas Shrugged: where Dagny Taggart slits John Galt throat in his sleep and then blows her brains out. A happy, ironic ending. The villains died.

We're talking about Fox News-- the GOP's PR outlet. And the USA, where illegal state surveillance is just something "serious people" accept.

If our government hasn't set up a cozy little department specifically for tapping communications at the request of people like Murdoch I'd be shocked.

it will bring down Newscorp.

Even if they find Murdoch guilty of wiretapping and extortion, his stake in the company is relatively small.

The U.S. government didn't shut down Enron over its illegal practices. The company declared bankruptcy because stockholders found out that it was falsifying earnings and dumped its stock.

Newscorp is huge and brings in a lot of revenue. It will still be around even if Murdoch (or, more likely some of his underlings) ends up in jail.

The royals, the rich can be blackmailed by the information he's gained on them. They won't pursue this. They'll even protect him so that nothing on them comes out. He'll make a few pay offs to a few others, and his empire will for the most part remain unscathed.

fantastic news but the fox effect is overblown in the US and a distraction/media red herring - it rides the talk radio bandwagon on most RW crap- that's where the ground work is done and usually by the time it shows up and is noticed on fox by the left it has already been pounded into the earholes of 50 million radio listeners.

fox cannot create like the unchallenged repetition from 1000 think tank-coordinated radio megaphones, protected by call screeners and reinforced with paid callers.

128. This media power prevented congress from impeaching Bush:
AMY GOODMAN: Why stop short of hearings on impeachment?

REP. JOHN CONYERS: Well, because, unless we’re going to impeach the Vice President and the President within this space of time, I think we could be very seriously compromising the greatest important—most important thing, in addition to documenting any misdeeds that may have happened, whether we continue to have Bush enablers continue to shatter and tear the Constitution to shreds. And so, all of this, academically, is great. I’ve got a number of books from my friends about which articles would be best and which ones we should go after more. But it seems to me that the time element and also the feasibility of whether or not there is any possible chance of success—there is a very stark reality that with the corporatization of the media, we could end up with turning people who should be documented in history as making many profound errors and violating the Constitution from villains into victims. And those are the kinds of considerations that have entered my mind in thinking about this process, Amy.

156. I'm TOTALLY shocked. I've been following this story for a year pretty much
and there hasn't been a lot of interest but things are bubbling up and it is turning into a very good read. I saw on the Guardian website that the article was one of their top read. Very good news!

151. For years I've wondered where their confidence and arrogance comes from. A person
who knows secrets and doesn't expect to fail can own confidence and arrogance. It explains a lot to me.

152. One think I like is that this is a crime take-down and not a wikileaks - Beck and the rest
can't blame wikileaks, Assange, Manning, Anon - none of them. Right?

A question: I fome on this thread say they have been following this for a long time - where has it been discussed - what venue was used to reveal and discuss? Which kind of celebrities are involved.

153. DU HAS PUSHED THIS STORY INTO THE TOP FIVE MOST READ AT THE GUARDIAN WEBSITE
Over 25,000 people have read this article and many have hit the link which has pushed it up into the Guardian UKs top read articles. VERY awesome considering that Murdoch owns many of the British papers and they are not running this story at all. Power to the people, eh?

Keep on reading!

154. And blackmail is a traditional way to control politicians
When bribes are not enough...just threaten to tell about their mistress or gay affair or financial corruption, and they're all yours.

167. Have you a link for 'just got hauled off for questioning'?
You link is about Yates giving evidence to a House of Commons committee. That's not 'hauled off for questioning'.
