If we don't support the uprising in Bahrain we are a bunch of hypocrites. |
|
Instead we let the Saudis come in to stifle Democracy which they don't have in their own country.
What happens if the Chinese militarily quell the next Tianamen Square? Economic sanctions perhaps? Puhleeze.

1. No question we're a bunch of hypocrites. It's what we do best. |
|
Even here at DU: prior to the UN action, we had DUers getting great support in threads condemning Obama for doing nothing. Now, the sexy posture is to slam him for this.
We may or may not do anything about Bahrain or Yemen. We'll be hypocrites regardless.

I support all uprisings against authoritarians everywhere.
I think you're trying to say the UN is a hypocrite? Is that what you mean by "we"?

4. This is a straw man and inadequate analysis. |
|
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 11:08 AM by DireStrike
Straw man because there ARE people who support the uprising in Bahrain.
The analysis is wrong because the situations are not necessarily the same, and we may not have the resources to deal with all such situations in the same way. In fact we do have the resources, but certainly we can't intervene in every such situation in the world. World opinion must also be viewed as a resource when considering whether we COULD pull off an intervention.
Further, it doesn't matter whether we as bystanders support action in Bahrain or China. You're correct in that the US would never intervene in these countries, for different reasons.
Edit: apparently it doesn't matter whether we support the intervention in Libya either. Polls show majority disapproval. (Although it must be noted that part of that majority is the Republicans, who simply disapprove because it has Obama's name and a (D) next to it.)

5. I do support the uprising in Bahrain, |

and in Yemen, and any uprising against oppression anywhere--the U.S. very much included. Doesn't mean the PTB are always going to agree with me, though. Most of the time they WON'T.
