Poll question: CVN-79 Navy's newest carrier yet-to-be named. What SHOULD it be named?
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 10:34 AM by Dennis Donovan
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CVN-79

As it stands, there's several names proposed for the Navy's newest carrier, scheduled to have its keel laid in 2012. Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-AZ) has proposed naming her the USS Arizona, after the the battleship and war grave USS Arizona. Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) is proposing naming it USS Barry Goldwater, after the late Senator from Arizona. There's an online petition that proposes naming it USS Enterprise (the present USS Enterprise is scheduled to be decommissioned by the time the new carrier becomes operational).

I'd like to see her named after JFK (the USS ex-John F Kennedy was decommissioned in 2007) or FDR (the carrier USS ex-Franklin D Roosevelt was decommissioned in 1977. An Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, the USS Roosevelt (DDG-80) is named after both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt).

Goes without saying, there should ALWAYS be a USS Enterprise on active duty.

Period.

41. Then you deny reality.
If you are on a college campus, you are currently enjoying one of those freedoms you so callously belittle, earned by the blood of those willing to fight for them.

You may believe yourself aloof from our economic system, all the while participating in it; even against your will, you benefit from it.

laughable.
Soldiers don't die in resource wars for me to indebt myself (most recently through exorbitant and parasitic student loans) to a failed economic system.

Go back to your Time-Life series on war, relish in your reality.

55. Locally owned cafes for me, thanks.
And I don't desire too much in truth. I desire an education; sad the price one has to pay to achieve that. And to my understanding it wasn't always that way.

I willingly participate in a system I "revile" in the hopes of changing that failed system.
Why would I support a war machine and nation that currently doesn't have the interest of the people as its concern? Or the majority at any rate.

I have no sympathy for volunteers who willingly sign up to protect the power elite, which is the current reality of things.

(But coffee sounds good right now. Thanks for the idea, grandpa!)

104. Ikonoklast...
In my youth I was one of those rough men.

I served this country for four years and killed people for this country.

Nothing I did..... nothing I did protected the freedom of any American.

Our troops in Afghanistan are doing nothing to protect our freedom.

Our troops in Iraq are doing nothing to protect our freedom.

Our troops stationed in Japan or Germany or England or any of the others is protecting our freedom.

If you've been in combat, you know the only thing you're fighting for is your squad/platoon.

We have to get over the idea that a military presence all over the world and wars against darker people will somehow protect our freedom.

We're losing our freedom at home faster than any enemy could wish for. We're losing our economic freedom, and that limits our other freedoms. We can speak and assemble and petition all we want, but nobody listens to the serfs.

54. There's already a USS Jimmy Carter:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Jimmy_Carter_(SSN-23)

USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23), the third and last Seawolf-class submarine, is the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for former President Jimmy Carter, who served in the United States Navy as a Communications Officer, Sonar Officer, Electronics Officer, Weapons Officer, and Supply Officer while on board the USS Pomfret (SS-391).<1> Jimmy Carter is one of the few ships of the United States Navy (and only the third submarine) to have been named for a person who was alive at the time of the ship's naming, and the first submarine to be named for a living former president; Jimmy Carter is the only U.S. President to qualify in submarines.

So it's fitting. GHWB, though a crappy president, did at least fly carrier-based naval aircraft. The one that really galls me is the USS Ronald Reagan, which sadly is a carrier and not a garbage scow.

70. USS Smedley D. Butler
It would be the second ship named for him. The first is a destroyer that was decommissioned in the 1940s.

Smedley Butler won two Medals of Honor and saved the United States from Prescott Bush. That in itself should be enough to justify naming a carrier after him.

In reality, anything but USS George W. Bush would be okay. HIS name belongs on the side of a garbage barge.

120. They already have one of those
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (why the FUCK they would name an AIRCRAFT CARRIER after a soldier is beyond me--it would have been more fitting to name the M109A6 howitzer after him, but I digress) earned the nickname "The Love Boat" after the Gulf War of 1991, when 15 female hands got pregnant aboard the ship and had to be reassigned to shore duty.

76. Why has no one mentioned the following:
USS Viagra
USS Mine-is-bigger-than-yours
USS Jock-Strap
USS Big Dick

Seriously, aren't these big military toys all meant to make up for something lacking in the men that are normally in command of their use? (Read rich white R's)

77. USS Enterprise
There have been 8 in the Fleet so far, including two that fought during the Revolutionary War and the famous one that fought during World War Two.

This is a name that should NOT be retired!

83. Problem with the name Arizona is that the ship is still
on the navy register to my knowledge and the name is not available nor will it be.

I think naming it after any of the previous CV's would be fitting. USS America might be nice, Kitty Hawk, Enterprise is good, Hornet, Yorktown, Saratoga, Langley, Wasp, Midway, Coral Sea,etc.
