Poor Minnesotans to be Barred from Carrying Cash

<snip>

Are there no workhouses? Are there no poorhouses?

Clearly, the GOP neighbors of Wisconsin’s Scott Walker intend to outdo him for meanness and humiliation. Republican legislators in Minnesota have introduced a bill to criminalize carrying cash for anyone on public assistance.

St. Paul, MN – Minnesota Republicans are pushing legislation that would make it a crime for people on public assistance to have more $20 in cash in their pockets any given month. This represents a change from their initial proposal, which banned them from having any money at all.

...

And...

In Oregon, my unemployed friends have told me they must be very careful where they use their state-issued debit cards for goods or cash — many banks charge large fees, as does the bank that manages the assistance debit card program for the service, depending on where the card is used. Banks are usuriously sucking fees from people who desperately need the pittance the state is willing to provide families for their laid-off breadwinners.

1. Is this to prevent them from taking all the money issued to them by debit cards?
So that they have to pay a fee each time they withdraw money from it?

4. They may be poor, but at least they can have one thing in common with Bill Gates.
(Apparently he doesn't carry cash.)

7. Isn't this like telling them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps,
& then taking away the bootstraps?

What they really want is to make being poor illegal & round up all the poor people & put them in work camps. The hatred this country has for the poor is astonishing.

14. GOP Candidate: Deport Latino Farmworkers, Replace With Inner-City Blacks
http://motherjones.com/mojo/2011/03/gop-candidate-deport-latino-farmworkers-replace-inner-city-blacks

A Republican candidate running for Rep. Chris "Craigslist" Lee's seat in upstate New York isn't doing his scandalized party any favors. Jack Davis, a local businessman vying for the seat, shocked local GOP leaders by suggesting that the area's Hispanic farmworkers should be deported, and that inner city blacks should be bused in to pick the crops instead, as The Buffalo News reports.

Davis made the comments during a February 20 endorsement interview with local Republican Party leaders—and it's not the first time he's floated the idea. In 2008, Davis told another local paper: "We have a huge unemployment problem with black youth in our cities. Put them on buses, take them out there and pay them a decent wage; they will work."

9. I can't wait to see how this is enforced
Will citizens be randomly stopped and told to empty their wallets, or will they be strip-searched?
Will cashiers be encouraged to perform "citizen arrests"? Will victims..er, citizens be profiled according to how well they're dressed?

Fun times ahead.

19. No matter how poor you are in MN if you live in public housing..
alone, you get $10 in food-stamps. Every month you have to fill out a two page questionnaire asking about income and assets and yes they ask how much cash you have. If you make a mistake, if the form gets lost, or someone feels mean you are audited. Most would rather visit the food shelf than apply before Cruella DeVille took over the MN Legislature.

I am guessing it will be a way to look in everyone's wallet to see if they are illegal or poor. They pretty much can pull you over any time now and ask who you are where you have been and where you are going and if they don't like the answers they can escalate to searches. You have an EBT card and $23 off to prison for you.

I witnessed a young woman sentenced to 90 days in jail during Reagan's regime for failing to report $150 in income in a three month period, she was doing daycare for a working poor mother to make ends meet and then was banned for life from food-stamps. She had a baby and a toddler. Minimum wage did not support paying for daycare especially for infants. But Goldman Sachs and many friends stole billions and we helped them out when they claimed poverty and they got bonuses for wrecking the world economy.

I imagine God is considering her options about now. I know I dread growing any older in this country.

10. I'd be ok with outlawing money for everyone
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 11:51 AM by txlibdem
What the world needs now
Is Love, Sweet Love
That's the only thing
That there's just too little of
--Burt Bacharach

Money? We don't need no stinking money.

Seriously, outlawing cash would remove all these tax havens for the rich and the corporations and force all of the "hidden wealth" to come out into the light of day.

/edit for spelling

11. This is stupid. I do wonder about how people using the unemployment debit card
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 11:54 AM by Bold Lib
are allowing themselves to be swindled. I have a bank account. My bank does free cash advances on debit/credit cards for it's customers. When I was on unemployment I went into my bank and did an advance on that card for the full amount of the benefit. I then deposited that into my free checking account. I never paid anyone ANY fee for using my unemployment debit card.

Use it wisely.
