Egypt: initial results show constitutional reforms passing, and unprecedented turnout

CAIRO - Partial results from a third of Egypt's provinces Sunday showed massive turnout and a vote overwhelmingly in favor of constitutional changes that eliminate restrictions on political rights and civil liberties...

The partial, preliminary results also showed 70 percent turnout at many polling centers, a massive showing after decades of political apathy in response to repression.

Millions of Egyptians voted freely on Saturday for the first time in more than half a century, joyfully waiting for hours to cast their ballots on the package of constitutional changes.

.....

Maybe after the GOP Governors get done we will see 70% voter turnout in this country! I know I am dreaming.

5. many of the reformers did not want this vote so soon

and voted no.

The reason seems to be that they have worries, which seem valid, that taking these incremental steps and scheduling the Presidential elections so soon, will mean that only two parties have the structure to come to the forefront and compete: The Muslim Brotherhood, and the NDP.

Yep, they are rightly concerned that Egypt will suffer America's fate.

I do so hope that the youth can organize and make sure they end up with a real, robust democracy.
