CA-36: Progressive Caucus Vice-Chair Judy Chu endorses Debra Bowen
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 02:17 PM by RandySF
At a gathering of over a hundred grassroots supporters, campaign staff, and elected officials from throughout the CA-36 district, California Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-32) announced she was endorsing Debra Bowen for Congress.

"I'm here today because we have a tremendous opportunity to elect Debra Bowen to the 36th congressional district. It's truly exciting for me. I've known her for a long time. I've known her as a state assembly member, I've known her as a state senator, I've known her as Secretary of State. I've known her as extremely intelligent, always outspoken, a true leader, someone with integrity in every seat that she's been in.

And that's why I'm so proud to say I was was the very first Congressperson to endorse Debra Bowen for Congress.

You know with Debra Bowen in this seat, you will have someone who will stand up to Wall Street. You know that she understands our coastline is a national treasure and she will do as much as she can to defend it. You know that she understands the value of education, and that we have to concentrate like a laser to make sure we get jobs in this district."

1. GREAT news!
I really want to see Debra Bowen succeed in this race. She is everything that Judy Chu has said.

And even better: she is no blue dog Democrat. I hope we have seen the last of Jane Harman.

4. She is
But it's no longer a choice between her and Jane Harman. All Democrats are pretty good progressives of varying degrees.

5. Why did the California Dem party regulars immediately rush in with Bowen?
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 03:30 PM by leveymg
Is Marcy too far to the left for them? Is there some other reason?

No more than a few hours after Harman announced her resignation, did Bowen's hat get thrown in and we heard a little chorus line here praising the Sec'y of State.

I have no problem with Bowen's politics. I just want to know why the party apparatchiks immediately wrote off Winograd.

6. Winograd is sincere, and intelligent.

Right now, she's seen as a spoiler between Bowen and the other candidate, Janice Hahn.

I think that's the reason Bowen got the big rush of support right away.

Marcy could split the ultra-liberal vote.

On edit: the name of the other candidate.

7. Hahn was the first to get in
All three major Democratic candidates are more progressive than jane Harman. Hahn was the first to the get and got the endorsements of Feinstein, Villaraigosa and Richard Gephardt. I voted for her as the progressive alternative to Gavin Newson for Lt. Gov. in 2010. Bowen started earning praise as Secretary of State in 2007. She kicked Diebold out of California, set strict standards for election fairness and transparency and earned the Profiles in Courage Award. She also has a solidly progressive record as State Senator. She has several members of the State Assembly, State Senate and now Chu endorsing her (I think because of their old legislative days). Winograd didn't actually get in until just recently. As a matter of fact, no one was even sure that she was still a Democrat because she was actually talking about leaving the party and registering as a Decline to State. We have three good choices with no one locking up the party establishment.
