network or cable news programs this morning selling the Odyssey Dawn invasion to the American people? Sure, he's busy, but since he canceled his Russian trip in order to monitor the situation - and since the President is out of the Country - wouldn't it seem that the Secretary of Defense should be spelling out the President's mission in Libya, reassuring Americans that under NO circumstances will ground troops be used to quell a civil war? How much does America know about the tribal conflicts within Libya? Wouldn't it have been reassuring to have him explain what is known? Could it be this:
Quoting Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Gates declared, “In my opinion, any future defense secretary who advises the president to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should ‘have his head examined.’” (The Post-Standard, Feb. 26, page 1).
