3. There was a report a few days ago of explosions at the Gaddafi compound
first reported as a kamikaze Libyan pilot, late changed to an individual suicide bomber. Reports indicated heavy guard around local burn unit/reconstruction hospital, with rumors of Gaddafi family injuries.

I'm wondering if this is related to that rather than airstrikes?

BREAKING: Almanara Media confirms from trusted sources that Khamis Al Gaddafi is dead

02:13 Almanara Media is confirming from trusted sources that Khamis Al Gaddafi has passed away on Sunday due to severe burn injuries he sustained a few days ago. The burns were caused when a fighter jet pilot performed a martyr mission and crashed his fighter jet into Gaddafi’s compound Baab Al Aziziyah. IMPORTANT: We are only citing Almanara Media for this news. We have not confirmed it via any other source.

6. What was his claim to infamy?
I certainly don't trust the US media and I don't trust the government to give the straight scoop on their "enemies du jour" .

So besides being Gaddafi's son what exactly did he do to warrant being roasted? Was he a torturer, did he incriminate and incarcerate without trials, did he wage war and kill innocents? Was he a war criminal?

10. Letter to Khamis Muammar al Gaddafi
Dear Khamis,

I hope this letter reaches you well, reaches you not too late and, above all, I hope it comes across with the sincerity I have in my heart.

I wish I was sending this letter in better circumstances and Libya was not going through the unrest that it is going through now. At the same time, maybe this is when a letter like this is the most needed.

It's difficult not to be influenced by the news, by the images and by the violence. It is difficult not to take sides, not to “judge” but...

God judges, History judges, your people judges, you judge... I don't judge.

It is in the hour of darkness that we need our friends the most and, I hope, I can be of a voice that makes a change in this hour of darkness that Libya is going through.

Had the troubles in Libya not happened I would have been proud to say that once we sat in the same class and studied the same books, listened to the same ideas and dreamt of changing the world. I'm writing here because I know you can and I know you will do the right thing and, as you do, I can repeat that I am still proud to have known you!

What I have seen so far on the news are only violent actions and brutal reactions. Is that all that is on the table? One party eliminating the other instead of achieving together?

What do your people want? Who in Libya has stopped and asked this question? Who has the trust of the people to ask this question and is that person trusted enough to see the will of the people realized?

Who is the one in Libya that will stand and say: I refuse to accept that violence is the way and retaliation is the answer!
Who is the one in Libya that will stand and say: I am going to be the change?

Are the people asking for more than freedom, equality, pride and self respect? Is this impossible to achieve in ways other than one side eliminating the other and fighting to the last bullet?

The Libyan people are drunk... yes! But they are drunk on freedom and equality. The Libyan people just witnessed two revolutions where the authorities ran over people with tanks and yet, at the end, the will of the people prevailed. The Libyan people are empowered by the belief that freedom and equality can be achieved if they face the government long enough. They expect violence and so far, from the speeches that I have heard, this is what the Libyan regime has delivered. Not only are you giving the revolution what they expect, you are fueling their rage and destroying future chances for peaceful agreements.
What is more important to you?

We are all dying and what is left is our legacy. What do you want your legacy to be? Do you want it to be marked with destruction and death or do you want it to be marked by Greatness... greatness comes from building not destroying, greatness comes from giving life not taking it.

You are the one: no one knows Libya better than a Libyan, no one knows Libya better than you. And no one has the resources that you have. No one is in a better position to to make a difference. No one in these troubled times can achieve greatness.

At IE we are part of an elite and we pride ourselves with the genius to turn obstacles into opportunities, and crisis to resolutions. Where every body else fails we manage to stand for what is right; for what is a leader other than a student, as you are, that can look at his people in the darkest hour and lead them into the light? I am at your disposal to help you achieve your greatness.

May God be with you and guide you in this time

Antonios

It is also about protecting civilians against Ghaddafi attacks. Be it from the air or land.

Plus according to sources he was killed by one of their own in a suicide mission.

26. Here's some links regarding kamikaze pilot Muhammad Mokhtar Osman
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 09:30 PM by Tx4obama
Photo: http://feb17.info/images/photo-of-muhammad-mukhtar-osman/

On march 15th 2011, a brave pilot, Muhammad Mokhtar Osman, pictured above, mounted a valiant effort to end the current bloodbath taking place in the North African State. Reports are unclear whether he was a pilot for the National Council or a Ghaddafi pilot who defected to the opposition and decided to launch a solo mission on Ghaddafi's secure compound of Baab Al Aziziyah. Some reports indicate he was on a Ghaddafi mission to bombard civilians but rather than bombing his own people he preferred turning his MIG 25 around and launched his own attack on the dictator's secure compound. Other reports indicate he took off as part of a 2 plane team with the mission of bombing strategic points in Al Guradibya base in Sirte. Their orders were to return immedietly after completing the mission. One pilot followed orders while the other flew to Tripoli where he emptied what he had left of ammunition on Baab Al Aziziyah and then crashed his plane into it. The pilot is considered a hero as well as a martyr by many in Libya.

It is thought that during this brave solo mission, two of Ghaddafi's sons, thought to be Khamis and Sa'adi were badly burnt and injured during the attack. It is further thought that following being rushed to the hospital, Khamis succumed to his injuries. These reports could not be confirmed as Ghaddafi ordered a complete media blackout and a total blockade of the hospital with noone let in or out.

Libya commends this brave pilot's efforts to save his fellow countrymen. Finally, it is unclear whether Muhammad Mokhtar Osman sacrificed his life for his country's benefit or whether he managed to eject in time prior to impact. If the latter is the case, one would hope he managed to get away from the compound.

God speed to all the National Council pilots in their efforts against a vastly superior force.

Pure Twitter rumor. There was never any eyewitness account by anyone of a plane crashing into the compound.

It's not clear if the second report, about somebody setting off bombs in the compound, happened or not.

16. Info below from Wikipedia regarding his 'possible' death
On March 20, 2011, it was reported by Al Manara Media, that Khamis al-Gaddafi, the leader of the Khamis Brigade and son of Muammar al-Gaddafi, had died from his injuries sustained when Muhammad Mokhtar Osman allegedly crashed his plane into Bab al-Azizia. However, this had not been confirmed by any other independent media. The crashing of the plane itself had also not been previously reported or confirmed by any other independent media except Al Manara

19. Info regarding FOUR of Gaddafi's sons......
Libya: Who's who in Gaddafi's inner circle

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi: Born in 1972, the best known of Col Gaddafi's sons as the leader of the modernising wing in the family. Originally trained as an engineer, he wrote his PhD thesis at London School of Economics on the role of civil society in democratisation.

Saadi Gaddafi: Born in 1973, once thought closest in outlook to Saif al-Islam. He was previously best-known as a professional footballer in Malta and Italy, but he re-emerged as head of the Libyan special forces, which are also playing a leading role in repressing the uprising.

Mutassim Gaddafi: Born in 1977, Mutassim is Col Gaddafi's fourth son but possibly the most powerful. A former army officer, he is now his father's National Security Adviser.

Khamis Gaddafi: Age unknown. Trained in Russia, he is trusted by his father enough to be put in command of an elite force, the Khamis Brigade, which has been in the forefront of putting down the most resilient areas of opposition.
