This is a big part of this country's problems: Collectively, we're fucking stupid
How Dumb Are We?
NEWSWEEK gave 1,000 Americans the U.S. Citizenship Test--38 percent failed. The country's future is imperiled by our ignorance.

They’re the sort of scores that drive high-school history teachers to drink. When NEWSWEEK recently asked 1,000 U.S. citizens to take America’s official citizenship test, 29 percent couldn’t name the vice president. Seventy-three percent couldn’t correctly say why we fought the Cold War. Forty-four percent were unable to define the Bill of Rights. And 6 percent couldn’t even circle Independence Day on a calendar.

Don’t get us wrong: civic ignorance is nothing new. For as long as they’ve existed, Americans have been misunderstanding checks and balances and misidentifying their senators. And they’ve been lamenting the philistinism of their peers ever since pollsters started publishing these dispiriting surveys back in Harry Truman’s day. (He was a president, by the way.) According to a study by Michael X. Delli Carpini, dean of the Annenberg School for Communication, the yearly shifts in civic knowledge since World War II have averaged out to “slightly under 1 percent.”

But the world has changed. And unfortunately, it’s becoming more and more inhospitable to incurious know-nothings—like us.

To appreciate the risks involved, it’s important to understand where American ignorance comes from. In March 2009, the European Journal of Communication asked citizens of Britain, Denmark, Finland, and the U.S. to answer questions on international affairs. The Europeans clobbered us. Sixty-eight percent of Danes, 75 percent of Brits, and 76 percent of Finns could, for example, identify the Taliban, but only 58 percent of Americans managed to do the same—even though we’ve led the charge in Afghanistan. It was only the latest in a series of polls that have shown us lagging behind our First World peers.

What is the "rule of law"?

a)Everyone must follow the law.

b)Everyone but the President must follow the law.

c)Government does not have to follow the law.

d)All laws must be the same in every state.

Now that's a tough one to answer these days.

Unaware and lacking in the leisure

time afforded most of the other Western democracies

with their much longer vacation

times, shorter work weeks, (um, no.."lazy" wouldn't be it)

is more like it.

Positing that some people are naturally more "stupid"

sounds out and out racist.

At this point, we have a lot less of a "middle class" and as

the article itself notes, the ranking of the more "well off"

Americans is comparable to the Europeans.

"Stupid", and "incurious", my ass.:eyes:

6. It is much easier to govern when ignorance prevails. I give you
the Middle East.

Who is rising up against Government?? The Educated.
All the young people have become educated and understand
their are better ways.

When you have populations who are either uninformed or
ill-informed they are much easier to manipulate. It does
not matter where they are located geographically. When
a country "puts down" scientific knowledge and denigrates
educated citizens, ignorance and misinformed people prevail
but the country falls behind. Can be beneficial to leaders
who are manipulative in their approach.

15. Standard operating procedure for any repressive/regressive regime.
The number of scientists and intellectuals who fled from Nazi Germany, Communist Russia, et al is all the example any of us should need to prove the point.

However, where those regimes were actually rounding up and either imprisoning or killing those with a clue, here we see the marginalization of intelligence - the use of the media in swaying public opinion to shut down any reasonable discourse. Insidious.

Stupidity(2003)

In this cheeky documentary, filmmaker Albert Nerenberg conducts an inquiry into the origins of stupidity, exploring why humans increasingly choose to be ignorant despite information being more widely available than ever. Footage includes interviews with authors, academicians and pop-culture personalities such as Noam Chomsky, Coolio, John Cleese, Salma Hayek and Bill Maher.

In fact, I found it pretty easy. Incredibly, one of the easiest one's, "What is the term for a US Senator?"...(6 yrs), had a 71% fail...:eyes:

I took one of these when I took American Government at the local Community College...6 individuals in the class were gearing up to become citizens, only they, and I aced the thing. Students going back 4-5 generations came out average, or worse yet, actually failed...82% didn't know that women were granted suffrage in 1920, (the question had only the dates: 1776, 1789, 1863, 1920; not mentioning it was the XIX Amendment).

29. It doesn’t help that the United States has one of the highest levels of income inequality...
It doesn’t help that the United States has one of the highest levels of income inequality in the developed world, with the top 400 households raking in more money than the bottom 60 percent combined. As Dalton Conley, an NYU sociologist, explains, “it’s like comparing apples and oranges. Unlike Denmark, we have a lot of very poor people without access to good education, and a huge immigrant population that doesn’t even speak English.” When surveys focus on well-off, native-born respondents, the U.S. actually holds its own against Europe.

Note the last line.

112. wow, i seem to have struck a nerve -- you responded defensively twice to the same post!
in the other one, you made a simple grammatical error ("you're mistakenly conflate"). normally, i wouldn't bother pointing that out, but given that you want to talk about '"my" stupidity' in this one, i thought i'd clue you in.

also, in the other post, you acknowledge that o.p.'s point, but somehow it's important to you that it's merely a significant minority, not a majority. yet, that's the problem with generalizations; they don't operate by majority rules. if a minority is significant enough, well-positioned enough, vocal enough, and so on, they are in a position to define the group's image. sad, but true.

of course, in this post, you make it clear you don't care about america's image, you only care about your image and my image. you want to make it clear that you're not one of those stupid people and that i am one of those stupid people. well, good luck with that. it may not make america a better place, but i suppose it will do something for your ego, and that's all that really matters, right?

"yet, that's the problem with generalizations; they don't operate by majority rules. if a minority is significant enough, well-positioned enough, vocal enough, and so on, they are in a position to define the group's image. sad, but true".

Sorry, dear, but the above statement is a matter of dispute. Oh, and you've made some spelling errors. Normally I wouldn't point that out, but since you want to point out my grammatical errors, I thought I'd clue you in.

As important as the significance, positioning and vocal ability of the generalization would be the willingness
of a particular audience to accept it as fact.

I can understand that willingness, when it comes from citizens of other nations who resent (rightly or wrongly) our power and influence.

I do not understand it coming from other Americans.

You say that I "don't care about America's image", but I am trying to defend

38. Bullshit. It's useless information
Americans can tear apart car engines, repair broken sinks, perform brain surgery, teach their kids the alphabet, cook pot roasts, and program computers.

What does not knowing the name of the Vice President have to do with anything?

(most doctors can't do brain surgery). You said Americans can cook pot roasts and do brain surgery- as if the majority of the population is qualified. And btw, I bet most Americans can't even cook a pot roast.

But you decided that all the above are stupid

These people love to tout the Constitution, but they have no idea what the document actually says.

And, actually, I think the current educational deform efforts seek to ensure that the masses stay stupid, uninformed, and unable to think critically for themselves.

60. Not surprising to me at all..
People "study" history to pass a test these days, and how many kids who do not go on to major in history in college, really try to learn much about history?

History in schools often is concentrated in elementary school aged kids, and then all-but-forgotten by high school when so many other electives become more important to kids.. Many school offer several options that "apply" as a "history credit", when in actuality, they are not all that applicable.

If the last "history stuff" you learned was in 6th grade, it's probably likely that by the time you are an adult, you will not have retained all that much:(

I wonder too, how many people tune into The History Channel, and think they are getting a history lesson:(

96. multiple choice tests do that
this online test is crap too as it is multiple choice, history is not to be studied with multiple choice, you get those kind of answers in English as a foreign language or perhaps history class in jr high in france but in high school you would be laughed at by your peers if you give students multiple choice questions in hisotry, they are supposed to be albe to examine a primary source document and a secondary source document and write an essay placing the historical context and their significance. vive la France

In 1997 when our youngest was a senior, there were at least 5 courses that "satisfied" the history requirement.. He was in AP History, so he got plenty of it, but how many others took an "option"?..

When I was in high school , we had civics as juniors and government as seniors.. No opting out..

67. Quotes from our Fearless Liar-in-Chief, George W. Bush
Quotes from our Fearless Liar-in-Chief, George W. Bush

Forward

"I'm the commander-see, I don't need to explain-I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being President."
George W. Bush, President of the United States of America

On Education:

"Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?" "Why don't you mentor a child how to read?" "Reading is the basics for all learning." "You teach a child to read, and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test.'' "I love the idea of a school in which people come to get educated and stay in the state in which they're educated." "So community colleges are accessible, they're available, they're affordable, and their curriculums don't get stuck. In other words, if there's a need for a certain kind of worker, I presume your curriculums evolved over time." "I mean, if you've ever been a governor of a state ..........

On Geography:

"I was raised in the West. The West of Texas. It's pretty close to California. In more ways than Washington, D.C., is close to California."

On War:

"I think war is a dangerous place."

On Terrorism:

"People say, how can I help on this war against terror? How can I fight evil? You can do so by mentoring a child; by going into a shut-in's house and say I love you."

On the War on Iraq:

"I wish I wasn't the war president. Who in the heck wants to be a war president? I don't." "I'm not the expert on how the Iraqi people think, because I live in America, where it's nice and safe and secure." "Had we to do it over again, we would look at the consequences of catastrophic success, being so successful so fast that an enemy that should have surrendered or been done in escaped and lived to fight another day." "CIA laid out several scenarios and said life could be lousy, life could be OK, life could be better, and they were just guessing as to what the conditions might be like."

82. I got 99%.
Missed the one about why we went to war with Great Britain. I would have diputed the answer that was supposed to be correct; the colonists had for 150 years been used to taxing and governing themselves, and England really was kind of clueless about what was going on over here. For example, Ben Franklin had crfeated a terrific postal system, the best in the world at the time, and the British had no idea. We used it heavily, of course, to communicate before and during the war.

103. Interesting test
I got 96%. I have seen the equivalent tests for British citizenship, and they are more difficult and also more peculiar: i.e. rather less basic history and geography, and rather more knowledge of bureaucratic rules.

I think, however, that people in most countries can be fairly 'fucking stupid' when it comes to such knowledge. E.g. - David Cameron, who had an extremely privileged Eton education, and went on to get a first-class degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University. He stated that Britain was the 'junior partner' to America in WW2 in *1940*!

111. Here's what drives middle school history teachers to drink:
<whine> "Why do we have to learn about the past? All those old, dead people? It's NOW that counts. Old fogies and their lives don't mean anything in today's world. History is BORING. Unless I can make a castle or mummy or pyramid, or wear some armor and bring my sword to school to show it off...can we quit learning and make a castle?"

I should add that my students, in the course of learning history, have made castles, mummies, and pyramids; have dressed in Revolutionary War clothing and examined a decommissioned brown bess, have participated in simulations, and many other engaging activities. They enjoy that, as long as they don't have to actually read, research, study, or THINK about the actual history behind those things. As soon as any of those unwanted activities rear their heads, the whining begins.
