Fla. Education Commissioner Steps Down
State Board Of Education To Appoint Replacement

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida's education commissioner Eric Smith is resigning.

In a release from his office on Monday, Smith said he told members of the State Board of Education of his plans to resign effective June 10, which is the final day of the current school year.

Smith said it was time to allow Gov. Rick Scott "to have input through the state board of education on the type of leader to pursue his goals."

The board, comprised of appointments by the governor, will make the decision on Smith's replacement.
