The local mindset,shall we say...

To the Editor,

I have been trying to keep up with the current problems the State of Texas is having with the school budget. The one thing I can’t understand is why the teachers are being laid off? Who is going to teach the children? Also yesterday in the Waxahachie Daily Light there was an article about cutting the arts. What next, sports? Are you not aware both of these are learning tools for the young people to get them ready for the real world? I am not aware of who is trying to balance the budget, but they need to be replaced. Below is some suggestions on things to eliminate before losing a teacher.

1. Cut down on administrative costs and non-teacher costs.

2. Cut out teachers aides. A few years ago, a student assisted the teacher and they felt honored to help. This is also a learning process for the child.

3. Cut out all the free breakfast and lunches. No child in the state of Texas is going hungry. Each mother gets a check from the government to feed her children. Also there are free food pantries all over the state. If a mother won’t feed her own child, then she needs to be turned in to Health and Human Services. The taxpayer doesn’t owe them a free ride.

4. Cut out the free daycare service. Schools are not in the babysitting business. I think the average taxpayer pays about $60 per week for daycare. I think about $25 per week would be a very good bargain.

5. How many assistant principals does each school need?

6. Start charging for teaching all illegals. SHOCKED! Why should these people get free schooling and they are not even American citizens.

There are many ways to reduce a budget, but for the sake of the children, don’t lay off a teacher.

Mary Meeks,

Waxahachie
