I oppose the US air strikes in Libya, but they are not impeachable offenses |
|
I opposed it on policy grounds. I just think the Europeans should do it. The US cannot and should not be depended on to be the UN's persistent bar room bouncer.

1. It is none of our business. Libya is not a threat to us, any more than Iraq was. |

France and Italy should be conducting this thing.
The only thing the U.S. might consider doing is helping arm the rebels with AA and AT weapons. Beyond that, STFO (Stay the Fuck Out).

3. I believe that I heard on the local news (Not the best Source I know) |

that the US is planning on Scaling back and let the EU take the majority stake in this one. It could just be rumor that they posted as news, but WGN is usually pretty good.

4. The War Powers Act requires the President to consult with Congress, and only invoke when in peril |
|
No President seems to like or have liked the resolution since the beginning. Boo-hoo.
Reagan complied with the consultation requirement before deploying the Marines to Lebanon, but didn't consult before Grenada; he DID, however, discuss it with Speaker O'Niell before the attack, and then claimed it was a national emergency after the fact. (The argument was that a Soviet-friendly airbase was about to become active in the Caribbean, posing a military threat to the country. It was bullshit and grandstanding, but it was a claim that was at least made.)
Bush Sr. didn't consult before Panama, but also claimed that it was a national emergency. He didn't consult before sending defensive troops to Saudi Arabia after Kuwait was invaded, but he did consult Congress before Desert Storm and got their permission.
There is no justification brought forth or seemingly possible that Libya presents a threat to us or has attacked us. There was no consultation at all with Congress. He has clearly stated before that the President does not have the legal right to attack a country that hasn't attacked us or that presents an immediate threat, so he knows better. This is crap.
